A passport identifies you as a citizen of a specific country. If you are a US citizen and you are traveling in the US, you don't need anything else but your driver's license/photo id to get you from place to place.

The reason why you needed your passport to go to Canada is because you went to a place that you're not a citizen of.

As for the comment about Alaska and Hawaii.....yes, we are separated by a land mass or an ocean from the rest of you in the continental US but we are still US states!

Hope that helps.....happy travels!

If you are visiting the US from another country you will need your passport stamped with your entry visa. If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport for travel within the US, however you should have some sort of identification if you are over 18.

you do not need a passport to travel in the US. A passport is to prove if you are a citizen of a certain country so you can get back into the country with little - no hassles

NO... that is why it is called the UNITED STATES. Originally, it was the SEVERAL STATES of America and at that time, you literally traveled from one country to another when you crossed a state line... but Passports are not necessary when the ENTIRE COUNTRY is just ONE Country.

Do you mean like state-to-state? For example New York to Michigan? If you mean that, then no, you don't.
