Takes the ashiness out. Other moisturizers will do that as well, but over the long run, cocoa butter lasts longer. It's a natural oil, and if you reapply it 2 - 3 times a day, you will feel a difference, and see a difference. Black skin takes on a lovely, glowy sheen when moisturized properly. And use extra on those heels/ankles, knees, and elbows. Nobody wants to see ashy elbows.

Being from eastern Pennsylvania (home of Hershey's) I am a big fan of cocoa butter.
Rub a little on your skin wherever it is dry or discolored. It takes months, but eventually the color will even out. In the meantime, it will condition the skin beautifully, and you will never notice any ashy flakes or other problems. Besides, it smells heavenly!
Hershey makes cocoa butter in bars and sticks,

Cocoa butter is great for the black skin. It reduces blemishes, strech marks, scars and a whole list of other things. It takes about three to four weeks of applying everyday to the strech mark or scar to see a improvement. in about three months they will disappear all together. It also keeps the skin smooth and as we all know and love ash free. It doesn't lighten the skin.

cocoa is a wonderful moisturizer, especially if you have dry skin..... apply it after a bath or shower, and let it sink in before getting dressed...you'll have soft smooth skin.
