Why is it that people act so worried about their pets, and they think that the pet is very sick. But, they get on the internet and ask questions acting real worried. Wouldn't you think that you would have your *** in the car with the pet on your way to the vet, instead of getting on the computer and acting worried??? Has anyone ever heard of a vet?

The emergency clinics have no choice to listen to what they are told. Vets do not neccesarily know if the problem is serious or not by listening on the phone. Most of these questions appear when vet offices are open during the week! When a person comes on here and asks a question why their dog is sick, it whelped the day before and can not stand today, do you really think that we here can tell them what is wrong with that dog?? Or a dog that has not eaten in 4 days! My god, take the dog to a vet! I had called my vet when he was closing one night, I told him that I thought my dog was bloating. He told me to head to the emergency clinic with her which I did. After x-rays, the vet there told me that she was not bloating but would need $3000 worth of surgery as she had a belly full of gravel and fluid. But, he would not do the surgery until the following day. I asked him if she would be alright until morning to see my regular vet. He put an IV in her and I took her home. Her bell

ly came down by morning, I had given her the lactated ringers through the night. Well, 2 vets told me to give her some canned pumpkin. She **** out the gravel and was fine! The emergency clinic bill was almost $600 for that one. I have also had emergency clinic bills up to $1000 for c-sections in the middle of the night. So yes, I have used emergency vets! I use a certain vet for OFA x-rays as her prices are cheaper, I am the first to admit that one. She takes good x-rays though too. I have no problem calling my vet if I have a pup that I need him to see. Using vets is a part of owning animals!!!!

Exactly!!! I would never sit my @$$ down in this chair if my dogs needed to go to the vet!! I too have spent lots of $$$$ at an ER Vet. I always made a joke out of it when my girl Desire would get stung by bees, trying to catch them,(she'd have a severe reaction), it was always on the weekend & I'd say she always had to catch these d@mn bees when our vet was closed!!! Made many trips to th ER Vet & will again if & when the need arises!!! I can only guess that people ask serious medical advice on here instead of going to the vet because they don't want to spend the $$.

You have a good point but on the same token, you don't.
There are a number of reasons.
These people know something is wrong with their pet but a part of them thinks it's not a big deal. That part of them is why they don't go rushing to the vet. Pets are just like humans. The health questions we ask on Yahoo Answers about our own health issues are the same for our pets. If someone says "I am a runner and my knee is starting to ache should I stop running until the aching stops or is this normal?" Usually another runner that experienced the same issue will answer the question based on his/her personal experience. This usually gives the person asking the question a feel for the sense of urgency. Sure they can just go to a doctor but sometimes you want to get an answer from someone that is in the same boat as you. There's nothing wrong with that.
In terms of sounding "real worried" well of course it's worrysum when a pet is experiencing some sort of health problem. You need to understand that it is also very difficult to detect an accurate tone when communicating through a text medium.
Perhaps you take it as they are being so worried when in reality their tone is just a casual "i think my pet is ok and i'm just reinforcing my thinking" tone.
Another reason why they turn to Yahoo Answers is because this site has people answering questions from all over the world, with all different professional backgrounds, cultures, etc...Someone that is an actual vet might come across the question and provide a professional answer/solution. You never know. That's the type of hope people lean towards when asking questions. There was a person that responded to this question earlier and he is an actual vet-tech...my point exactly.
I understand where you are coming from. Don't get me wrong, there are boneheads out there that will ask questions that are clearly inappropriate to be answered here on this site and should be reserved for a professional. I guess for every question asked we should just take it for what it is...just a question...if it bothers you to a certain point..maybe it's not the questions that are the problem here....

there are times that that "unexpected' expense of an animal emergencies cause people to panic. I do not fault anyone for asking questions and trying to do all they can before one vet visit becomes a $1000 in an animal that will end up euthanized. How can you fault someone for asking questions the quickest way they have access to? Calling a vet sometimes is more intimidating and only ends with NO answers and the vet saying "well bring em on in here and we will run some test and take a look"
Well I dont know about you but I hate to hear crap like that from a mechanic, let alone a vet.
Knowledge is power
Example: one of my numerous pets became sick a few weeks ago. 105* temp, lethargic and dehydrated. And yes I did call the vet...."welllll, bring her on in well see what we can do" ok so I did... Advice... "Oh we need to hospitalize her right now with a temp like that" and what will you do for her? "welll we'll give her fluids and watch her and runs some tests to see whats going on" Do you know whats wrong with her right now? "nope... its either that or put her down cuz I dont think she'll make it with a temp like that" Ok can I get her an antibiotic and think about this (because the starting costs for hospitalization was over $200) "sure, but I dont think it will help" well lets try that first
One shot/one vet exam(which consisted of taking her temp) $65
pet at home being babied and hydrated by me $0
Temp broke after 36 hrs and pet is fine now Priceless to kids.
Do you take your own doctors advice as law? or seek information, talk to people learn more?
Do you let your mechanic rope you into new brakes and a few other things when you just hear a minor squeak or do you check things out find out more, investigate?
Come on, cut people some slack, give em a break.

I really believe that many people buy or acquire animals and do not consider the future cost an animal presents and then something happens and they truly can not afford to take the animal to the vet.
As for the others, lack of common sense seems to be a wide spread problem. Why go to the vet and get the opinion of a professional, when you can use sevin dust for fleas or used motor oil for mange? There are so many great suggestions here on YA who needs a vet? My favorite is when you do suggest going to the vet and the questioner get pissy about it and insults the answerers.
ETA to the poster above me: you have some valid points but even a vet can not give an evaluation over the phone or net so when something is seriously wrong (most people can differentiate between minor and major problems) people should not sit behind their computers asking questions they should head to the vet to take care of their pet.

Because people want the pet, not the expense.
I am sure that you have seen the questions in here like, "I'm feeding my dog _______(fill in the blank with Ol" Roy, Kibbles and Bits, or some other nutritionally bankrupt food) and I don't know why he/she has the diarrhea." Or, "I bread my dog, and she has had a puppy stuck for two hours, what should I do." Or my personal favorite, "My dog has been vomiting and having bloody diarrhea, what home remedies can I use to make her better?"
Yep, people are stupid and don't understand the cost of that "free" puppy. I own four dogs, three cats, and an evil hamster. I keep at least $500 in savings on the off chance one of these creatures get sick. If you can't afford the unexpected visit to the vet, give up the dang animals! Shoot, if your child was sick, you wouldn't think twice, but because it is just Fido, it's OK? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

You must not have ever rushed your pet to an emergency clinic and paid $200 to find out your dog has a belly ache. This happened to me and I was pretty upset when I saw the bill. So maybe instead of judging people when they ask questions like this we should see if we can determine what these symptoms mean and offer advise. If not, DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION. That was the first and last time I will take my dog to the emergency clinic because he appears sick.

Yeah, but people have different situations. They might not think it's that urgent, or if they're not experienced dog owners, they might not know if something's wrong. Of course I'd have my doggie in the car and to the vet the second I thought something was wrong. But not everybody is thinking so clearly when they are worried.

some ppl love their pet to death but they might not have the money to go to the pet every single time they get worried when they could just be over reacting so they get online to make sure that the problem is in accual need of the vet before the use the money to go right away. thats my thought. bye!

are you having a stressful day? I feel the same way and there are days that i can't read one more question on here....so i log off. I am a retired vet tech and when people ask me why i retired young I bite my tongue to not tell them about the amount of crazy owners I had to deal with....miss the animals but not the people.

You must not have a problem with paying money. Because it sucks to go all the way to the vet and having to pay just to find out that nothing is wrong with your dog.
