It kind of depends on how overweight someone is and the number of calories they have been ingesting. If they have been taking in a lot of calories, it is relatively easy to create the caloric deficit required to lose weight simply by eating less. There are 3500 calories in a pound. REducing intake by 500 calories per day will result in about a pound of loss per day. If you were taking in 2500 - 3000 calories per day, then taking in 2000 - 2500 you could lose a pound. More reduction = greater loss. As you lose, you cannot reduce the calories to the extent needed to produce the loss alone and exercise becomes infinitely more important to produce loss.
At the beginning of weight loss, exercise contributes about 20%; by the time you are near goal and, especially for maintenance, exercise contributes upwards of 80% +.

by far exercise. Diet can cut down on your energy and its a harder track to follow...
if you want to lose weight, run, bike, swim, whatever.
If you want to becaome stronger, follow these steps
the BEST way to work out is as follows:
work on 1 aspect on 1 day such as upper body/arms
on the next day, work on another area such as legs/lower body
these will MAXIMIZE results because it allows rest time for your mucle fibers to heal over.
You wont see results instantly no matter how you exercize. You wont look thinner after running a marathon either but it will eventually pay off. Some thing with working out. This method maximizes results leading to a stronger body quicker

Diet. You can exercise all you want, but with no change in your diet, you won't see big results. It takes a lot of time in the gym to burn calories on a large scale. 1 pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories. That is a lot of time on the tread-mill.

Actually, it's diet. Not diet as in restricting you from eating certain things and something you can get off of, but diet as in eating healthy and following the food pyramid. Exercise plays a not-as-major role. If you don't eat properly but exercise your butt off, you most likely won't achieve your weight goal as fast as you could've.
