Thank you for your answers so far... This is an MPhil dissertation, with the intention of upgrading to PhD in October, 2007. Subject matter is political science (more specifically, enlargement of the EU to Eastern Europe. I won't bore you with all the details though....!) Thanks again!!

Not enough detail in the question. What type of dissertation - Masters, PhD,...? subject area?

Typical structure might be:

Intro
literature
methods
findings
conclusions

I would assume 40,000 words is the maximum, not a target.

When it's done it's done. Trite, I know, but in a few weeks it's all over. Then, when you pass, you have the letters after your name for the rest of your life.

Another approach...
What got you into this subject in the first place - where did the spark come from? Try to remember why you started, what your goal was, and make the links between those goals and the dissertation clear and explicit. Forget the certificate at the end, try to put the knowledge you are trying to create and capture into a bigger perspective. University work should really be about your engagement with the subject - not the crinkly paper at the end.

With a chapter based approach give yourself targets for each chapter - remebering some (literature) may take longer than others (intro / methods). Then set deadlines for the chapter you are on - prep, write first draft, etc. Don't get distracted, but factor in time off ( and catch up if you "overspend" your time).

Try to enjoy it.

Good luck.

One step at a time. It's a huge job if you look at the whole thing, but if you take a piece at a time and just do one piece before thinking about the next, it becomes a manageable project. If it helps, plan a happy celebration party with your family or your honey for when you're done.

Read up on whatever your subject is. Type up a load of quotes from other writers on this subject and start fleshing out your own content and argument from there.
