Dear Jim and John,

I'd like to update you on my progress the (name) project. I have completed (describe/detail the first two stages/tasks), and still need to complete (describe/detail the final stage/task). I estimate that it will take me another hour to complete this project. I would be happy to stay late to finish the project tonight, but that will require at least one hour or overtime pay, so I need your approval for that expenditure.
I can also finish the project tomorrow, but that may delay my progress in (other tasks) and may not meet your deadline of (time/date). Please let me know what you would like me to do. Thank you!

Sincerely,
(Your name)

Dear So and So:

At this time I am in the middle of working on this project, lead, work load etc and due to time restraints of a typical workday I am regretfully unable to complete the task. Therefore I am sending you this email to request onehour extra of overtime to complete it. ALthough this may be against company policy I feel that it would benefit everyone if you could grant me this one time request.

Thank you in advance.

I think Teresa's answer is slightly better.

You want to give the management the choice - do they want you to work OT or push it off until tomorrow.

That really is their decision.

Ask sooner rather than later - gives them time to think.

Best of luck!

Maybe it is just my company but if I need to stay for an hour or so I just do it, no questions asked
