"Religious leaders" and "scientists" are not the same thing. The 2012 armageddon is not a scientifically testable proposition. Stop worrying; use your time to do good works and make the earth a better place to live.

Let me explain: Scientist is no formal title, everybody can call him/herself a scientist. Now what you do is this: You predict the end of the world, make up a few stories around it to trick some people into believing you, always stress the fact that you are a "scientist" and that you "have undeniable proof". Then you write lots of books about it and sell them for $100 a piece, and tell people that they have to buy all 20 of them to learn how they can be saved from Armageddon. You just have to put the date far enough in the future (like 2012) so that when the time has come and nothing has happened, you're already a millionaire leading a quiet life somewhere in the fiji islands.
It's been done several times every year, and every now and then some scammers manage to get their scheme more media coverage than others, which is why so many people have heard of the 2012 scheme.

As said above, the Mayan Calander predicts the end of the world in 2012. However that is not based on any modern science. Some modern science predicts a huge Sumatran volcano in 2012, big enough to end civilisation as we know it. One or two other weird predictions for 2012 as well.
However, as we all know, earthquakes and volcanos still can't be predicted, so not sure on what science the scientists base their opinion about 2012.
If you are so worried about it, just remember this, throughout history there have been predicted world ending dates. They have all come and gone, and we are still here. The prediction for 2012 is no different. We will be here in 2013. The good news is, if I'm wrong you won't be able to tell me that. LOL
Stop worrying and start living. Take care now

There have been "End of the World" stories since humans arrived, and we are still here, Nostradamus predicted the end of the world ages ago, I cant see any scientist putting their name to such an idea, but I dont set much store by what scientists say anyway, they told us in the seventies that oil would definately run out in 15 years, and that a new ice age was on the way and we would all be knee deep in polar bears, dont fret, the world has seen some dire things in its time, plagues, famines etc, and humans are still here, more now than ever!

The scientists you are thinking of are probably located in Iran, who have plans to nuke the world during the Olympic Year of 2012.
If I were you, I would completely ignore any such stories and stop worrying. The world is not going to end in 2012.
I'll let you know when a date has been decided for Armageddon. It's not just yet anyway.
Always remember it's scientists who brought us dangerous chemical warfare [WW-One Mustard Gas etc], the same people who produce drugs which have dangerous side effects and who use the human race as guinea pigs and under the Nazis experimented on living humans in their death camps.
Who needs scientists? Have you noticed, you can never find one when you need one! Isn't that strange?

no its not the end of the world...but much bigger...
everything has a vibration. at the moment earths vibration is at the 3rd...well on 2012 the earths vibration moves up to the 4th.
now things on the third aren't supposed to be able to see things on the fourth...its meant to be the spiritual awakening.
where like a computer all those of you who are a sleep wake up spiritually.
the Mayan calender goes by cycles. its just the end of the cycle. earth and all the planets and stars are back in the same position they where at the start of the cycle.
science says that energy cant be created nor destroyed you are energy so is life you just change, but no its not Armageddon, we just move up a level it may be rough if we don't use love and change some of the things in this world. but you never really die you just like electricity become say light or heat or what ever, but it ain't 2012 that's a good year trust me.

The scientists have not actually said this and it wont be the world that ends for mother earth has been here for 4.5 to 5billion years and she will behere for a much longer time.
Wot may end or undergo dramatic changes that could lead to an end is MANKIND, things have changed since about 1989 and these changes have increased and are approaching there final stages, they have been instilled upon the general populas of the world, for what we the general public have been taught about the past are the basics, and not the whole truth.
The powers to be understand the real past and keep it hidden for they know that a cycle exists but this cycle involves an out side influence with whom they have an alliance, by that i mean for out side our world.
They have used the concept of religon to keep the populas blinkered, iam sure you have all felt a strangness over the last 10-15yrs. i think thats enough on that
So yes things will change and things will come to an end but total end will be beyound 2012, 2012 will see the major changes start and their effects on mankind i mean on the general population on planet earth.
Yes every one should be worried because the changes that are happening now must be realized and mankind should start questioning the powers to be for our present generation and that of our children and their future.

First of all, a bit selfish don't you think. It has to end in someone's lifetime. Unless you prefer that your children bare the brunt of global warmng after WE are the one's polluting the air. Yeah, believe it or not but it's your car exhaust fumes that are gonna kill us all. The underground train or the public transport you use is gonna cause our end. The paper you write on is contributing to global warming. The furniture, for which they have to cut down trees for, is going to cause our end. You don't want it to end in YOUR lifetime, after YOU caused it??? and secondly..... the world was supposed to end in November last year. Some of the pople in the African countries believed that and they sold their houses and cut all ties with money as they wanted to die "without any thing to do with materilisation", they are now , as a result begging for food on the streets. Don't believe everything you hear and when i mentioned YOU, i don't mean you alone. PS: this is the words of a 12 yr old aspiring to become an enviromental lawyer. Need some feed back. Do you think i'll make it based on my answer?

The Mayans believed that the world would end in 2012, or at least that is when their calanders end. Don't know of any "scientists" who think that the world will end
As for you being "reli" [sic] worried about it, don't be. If the world is going to end it is going to end, there is nothing you can do about it either way

No the scientist say its achievable for december 21, 2011. the only reason they say this is as a results of the fact the mayans found out that the a number of planets will align. it fairly is rather unlikely that something might come of this. in addition they say that each million years the north and south poles change polarity which will reason each element to burn and be destroyed. that concept conflicts with each element that the meant "evolution concept" stands for. that we've slowly progressed over hundreds of thousands of years. How might dinosaurs be hundreds of thousands of years previous if the whole international incinerated itself each million years. backside line if it became real it would be everywhere all around the information.
