Well, I usually try to read it right away & return it so I don't forget... but when I lend someone a book of my own, I only lend it out after I'm done reading it myself and I really don't care if it takes several months, as long as I get it back eventually. I do re-read, but rarely within the year, so it's not like I need it in the meantime.
I'm also a member of BookCrossing, a book club where people give their used books away, but we also have books we only lend out and send to a lot of people in turn (book rings). For those books, we usually request people to read them in a month, give or take a few days.
In short, it sort of depends on your situation and the agreement you've made with your friend! If you really have no time now, I'd ask your friend if he minds if you keep it a few weeks longer, or he'd rather want it back & you can borrow it at some later time.

Any time between one and two week is OK. If you need more time, it would be polite to tell the owner you could't finish as yet (DON'T say you didn't start hahaha) and ask him/her if he would mind you to keep the book for a few days more, say, until XXX (depending on your reading speed).
In this way, your friend will know that you did't forget about the book you borrowed, and will also know that you are actually reading it.

You might ask the person you borrowed it from if it is okay for you to hang on to it for a bit longer.
If you don't have time to read it right now - they might know someone else who would like to borrow it. You could always borrow it again when you actually have time to read it.

Read it and return it. Let the person know that owns the book that you haven't forgotten them, and that it's just taking you a bit longer to get through it then you expected.

I think you should call the person you borrowed the book from. Let him/her know you are just starting on it.

Depends on how much the lender wants it back. My best friend lends me books for months before I return them and she's good with that.

It depends on who you borrowed it from, and if they want it back right away or if they don't mind you keeping it for a while. Hope I helped some.

I loaned a book to a friend at work once. She kept it FOREVER. Then she got fired and I never saw that book again. I had to buy another one . . .
