All of nature is reborn each year. I don't know what makes man think that we are any different? Are we somehow above this natural order to the world of death and rebirth?

According to the Bible, from which I get my beliefs, when a person dies the body returns to dust, the breath of life goes back to God who gave it, and the soul dies (the Bible says that the soul that sins shall die and that all have sinned). Without breath, the thoughts perish, all consciousness ceases, along with all emotions, feelings and any other mental functions. It's the reverse of creation. At creation the Bible says that when God formed man from the "dust of the earth" and "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life", "man became a living soul". It's like making a box: wood and nails together make a box. Take the nails out of the wood, and you no longer have a box. It ceases to exist. That's what happens in death as we know it, actually called "the first death" in the Bible....or a "sleep" from which, when Jesus returns, he will resurrect ("awaken") both the righteous and unrighteous. After that it's eternal life or eternal death ("the second death" with the same result as the "first death" only with eternal finality) according to the choice the individual made while still alive.

As energy can not be destroyed, after the elements that make up the body havae begun the process of returning to the universe, the energy that may represent our consciousness moves on through a time of learning before it returns to a new life .
My daughter, when she was approximately 3 years of age began to teach me about reincarnation by telling me about knowing different people "before" and vividly describing what people looked liked, what they did, how they dressed, etc.
She has since grown up and forgotten most of what she told me, which seems perfectly normal as few pesons past the age of six seem to recall such. However, it was very amazing and I have not forgotten.
this is the closest I have ever come to having an actual religious experience. As a Buddhist, I did find it intersting. Also, I was very careful to never lead her to an answer or into making a statement. When she told me these things, I simply listened and accepted without comment.
May you be well.

I don't believe in a soul, and as my mind is an emergent property of my brain, when my brain dies, my mind ceases to exist.

My own belief is that we have no soul and that when we die we become bags of biochemical goo.
