I manage my grandfathers resturant. We do a takeout a service and sometimes I fill in on that end as the cashier. When customers come in they tell me the same jokes over and over again. When I dont laugh they catch an attitude. I am not a fake person so if I laugh at something that I dont think is funny you will be able to tell because I am not very good at it. Why do they get mad? I mean I understand that we need to treat everyone with respect but is it disrespectful to simply not laugh at a joke?

I always smile and I didnt say I never laugh at their jokes. Sometimes they are funny, even the ones I dont laugh at are funny the first time I hear them. .

J*Mo, the customer is not always right. The customer is wrong 90% of the time but you should always treat the customer with respect. Which is what I am basing my question on.

Because it's like giving something to a black hole.

They are trying to be nice, and when someone doesn't respond it's like they are a user that just sucks the life out of people.

I'm not saying that's what you are doing, but what it might feel like from the other side.

There is really no point in trying to explain why you MUST be polite and always smile at a customer based on your responses to the reasonable and correct answers people have given you.
What you need is a ANOTHER job. You obviously don't like this one and don't have a knack for it. Pleases get into the kitchen and away from direct contact with customers before you do any more damage to your family restaurant!
The customer IS always right honey. Not wrong 90% of the time as you say. Anyone with such an attitude has no business being in the restaurant business. Grandpa should fire you or put you in the kitchen asap.

Maybe you should just smile and say "thanks for sharing that with me". Even if it is not funny, at least they tried to cheer up up, and they are probably disappointed that you did not acknowledge the fact that at least they tried.

"the customer is not always right. The customer is wrong 90% of the time but you should always treat the customer with respect"

Odd that you should say that. Even if the customer is WRONG, the customer is always the one PAYING your salary. If he is not satified, then he won't come back and you will need to find another paying job. That is what we men by "the customer is always right" (meaning, give him what he wants -- if you can).

I don't think it's disrepectful, but it might help you get better tips if you gave a little smile or a chuckle :) Maybe you could just kind of laugh at them, rather than the joke.

i agree with solorose! u shud just smile haha n_n oh yah, i thenk, i lot of people treat people worse when they see them in soem sort of "servant" type role, its so strange to me, its liek a dehumanizing thing. i think customers shud try to be pleasant too, an not give anyone a hard time, just being pleasant might keep someone from ripping their hair out at that other anoying customer!! ♥

They want service with a smile and they think that if a waitress does not find their jokes funny, then they have no chance.

you could at least smile, a smile costs you nothing and indicates that you at least did them the courtesy of listening, and acknowledge they were trying to tell a joke, even if you didn't find it funny. You are in the business of serving them after all, it is part of what they pay for, so will it kill you to smile? Will your face break?

"Treating people with respect" would assume that even if you are hearing a (bad) joke (for the 20th time) that you put a pleasant expression on your face, a tilt of the head, a wink, a polite "haha," etc.

Obviously if you KNOW that people are "getting mad" or "angry" because of your lack of response, there is something gratifying to you about their displeasure.

Maybe you should get a different job.

If they get mad that is their choice and their problem. I am the same, if it ain't funny, I ain't laughing.

The other side to this is that you are working for your grandfather's joint, so that may be a situation to fake your laughs to these tards so they keep coming back. If you were just working at the golden arches I wouldn't fake...but for the sake of gramps you may want to.
