My dog is 9 months old and if he is able to get out he runs into the street. I am afraid he will get out and get hurt. He almost got hit by a car and i realized this is a serious problem. Can anyone give me tips on how to train him not to run away?

You might want to get a dog run. They are bigger than a crate and provide safety when your not around. They cannot jump out of them if you get one with a top. Work with him everyday to establish boundaries. He clearly does not know where he is supposed to be. You as the OWNER need to show and work on this. Very soon may I add. Is he digging to get out? How is he getting out of your yard? Fix that problem. If he is diggin you can use Cayenne pepper to stop the digging. Start by filling in any holes with dirt and sprinkle the Cayenne pepper on the places he likes to dig. This may help! It helped me with my 3 month old puppy. She always wanted into my neighbors yard. She no longer digs there or any where else I put the pepper! Good luck and I hope you can fix this before your precious dog gets hurt! Check out Lowe's or Home Depot they have dog runs already in packages!

5 easy steps
1. Take abut 1/4 of a newspaper and roll it up like a baseball bat.
2. Put him on a lash and tie him to the front gate
3. Open the gate and go outside the gate and call him out
4. Hit him with the rolled up newspaper as soon as he crosses the gate.(hard enough to make a sound but not hard enough to hurt him)
5. Whack the newspaper hard on the ground right next to him then hit him again.
I did this to all 4 dogs i have since they were puppies and even tho the gate is wide open they would never go beyond it. I am keeping my uncles 2 year old rottweiler as he is out of the country and she had done that very same thing on Saturday and Sunday. After doing that over the last 3 days she finally stopped this morning so do not even ask if a 9 month old dog is still trainable.

YES... call his name= and when he looks at you -== YOU run in the opposite direction.. he will then come after you. Slow to a walk and tell him good boy...

A training method... have a 20'-30' long line.. imagine a square and walk 20 steps. Stop and turn like you are going down the next leg... you will stand here for 2-3 mins - Should your dog leave you - let him go and when he gets to the end of his line... Call his name *Here Spot* and ***quickly*** turn in the opposite direction and start walking = another 20 paces... stop and turn. Just see what happens as you repeat this - at this point you will not be concerned which side he is walking on.

When he catches up to you give him praise but keep walking your 20 paces... when you stop you can pat him... then see if he wanders away and make sure you stick with the 2 or 3 mins before walking again - unless he wanders away.. (smiles).

What he learns - If he is close to you ***it is safe***... if he wanders away ***it is NOT safe***... he does not think you are not doing the corrections as you are happy to see him. He also learns when you call his name he better come to you in a hurry... but with this lesson you are teaching him to stay by your side even if you take him into a crowded flea market.

Best to use a chain collar for this excersize like a fur saver. At a year I start using the prong as they only pinch the skin not choke them out.

Good Luck

First of all, I'm glad you realize how dangerous a loose dog can be. Good for you.

What you and your dog need is Obedience training. It takes between 8 and 10 weeks to retrain your dog. BUT it's well worth the time, effort and money.

Obedience is a great sport unto itself - where competitors don't compete against you - so much as with you. And getting that CD, CDX or Utility certification is a real accomplishment. It's a fun sport.

Plus, it's the basis of all the other sports/activities for your dog - agility, fly-ball, therapy etc. They all start with obedience.

put a leash and collar on your dog, go to the door and have your dog sig, then say stay! or wait, then slorly open the door, f the dog gets up, shut the door have him sit again, and try again. when the dog is good, praize and open the door a bit further, when eventually, you want the dog to go through the door, say OK, and let him follow behind you on the collar and leash.
this may take time, but eventually it will work.
eventually, if you see him going to the door, say NO, leave it, and he should leave it alone.

if your dog escapes when you take him out side then its Good idea to put him on a leash and carry some dog treats with you so that if he runs away he smells the treats and comes back to you or you can give him the treats if hes good that way he know that he excepted.

You need to buckle down and do DAILY training. If you don't know how, please, take a class or private lessons from a trainer. There are books on dog training at the library, but none of this will help you if you don't do it daily.
