There's an article in this month's Blackbelt I got in the mail today, it talks of a MMA Jiujitsu guy who's attacked outside after a fight in Las Vegas. He threw the first guy into a car, knocking him out, then put the 2nd guy in an armbar... .the bad guy knowledgably tapped out, and the MMA guy left go, as his sport dictates. The guy then took a knife and stabbed the MMA guy in the stomach, and he to this day has digestive problems...
If someone attacks you and you can kill them, you do. You certainly do not do anything soft. It's Real, not a game. Everything is not only permitted, but required if you want to survive.

Situations with weapons are the most serious to deal with for the obvious reasons. The attacker has already set the level of the situation by his use of the weapon and there is no way of knowing that he was not trying to cut your jugular vein and missed or that his next cut won't miss. You first have to deal with and take control of the weapon and once you have done that successfully then deal with him. During the time you are trying to take control of the weapon it should be anything goes and no holds barred. Once that has been successfully accomplished you can then more adequately deal with him and on the level that you think is appropriate.
Prior to this is were awareness and avoidance comes in first so that you do not get caught in a situation like this and if you do then run if you have the opportunity. Most people do not spend sufficient time developing their skills to deal with an attacker with a real weapon-especially after they have been injured. In your situation you will have a head start if he reaches to retrieve the weapon and your arm is cut-not your leg so you can still run.
Generally the police and prosecutors take a dim view of criminals assaulting people with weapons and that pretty much sets the level legally that they will deal with the situation and the attacker on rather than you the victim.

I dangerous assailant who already has put my life in danger......
If I'm pinned to the wall and I can't get myself free then this must be one STRONG man!, if that's the case continuing the fight might not be a good idea.
If I can I'd try to free myself, either with kicks, knees, or less traditional ways (bitting is always effective, spitting, yelling too and so on). If I'm able to get free , and already stating the this is one STRONG man, the best course of action would be to get the hell out of there (run, run, RUN!).
If this person has pinned me to the wall, but can't keep me there as he's not strong enough...... then it's a different story, I have a fighting chance, and I'm injured which would trigger survival instinct and most likely rage, how I would react afterwards is hard to predict.
I would hope I could disable this person quickly, avoid further aggression, and trial for murder (a person who just slashed me with a knife would definetely qualify as somebody I would consider killing).
Once again, If I could disable this person, (beat him up, kill him, whatever) i would run, run RUN!! then call the police.

since this person has already intended to injure me (thus the knife) then deadly force is reccommended to survive this encounter because your life has therefore has been seriously threatened so deadly force CAN be used here, because you don't know how far this person is willing to go to get what they want from you, and since you mentioned that this person has already injured you by cutting you then it IS safe to assume that you're at risk of losing your life even though it is only a minor injury, they may be more willing to do more to get what they want.
I'd go for a kick to the groin or as you suggested, strike the knee, since you've disarmed him he'd prob'ly be more likely to try and retrieve the weapon than to grab you, so I would do as much damage as possible for two reasons: 1) it reduces the opponents ability to retaliate due to pain and thus reduced use of the injured limb and they may be too focused on the injury or pain, 2) injury is a better deterrent because usually the opponent may think twice before attacking you again (if they're smart), but this can change if the person is drunk or high from drugs.
the fact of the matter is, this person has confronted you with a weapon, so therefore they intended in some reason to inflict bodily harm to you even if it was only to intimidate you to begin with, if they had attacked you with their bare hands, then a lesser measure of defense would be required (such as pain compliance or joint lock)

Knee to the groin, followed by another knee to the groin. If he hasn't let go yet, kick to the knee. Basically make sure he won't get up quick. Probably a few additional strikes, to make sure he stays down. Then back away and call the cops.

In your I.D. profile/ photo and nick-name, moniker, you are apparently stating that you have, at least some knowledge, of self defence. GREAT, All Well and Good.
As a father of 3 daughters (all grown, gone, and on their own, now)( and 1 son), I recommend that ALL FEMALES ACQUIRE, AS A MINAMUM, sufficient self defence abilities, to disarm, dehabilitate, and totally discourage ANY ATTACKER, WHEATHER MALE OR FEMALE!!!!!
As to acquiring a " CONCEELED HANDGUN LICENSE" I also recommend that: ALL FEMALES, ALL MALES, WHO HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE U.S.A. ARMED FORCES, HAVE NO - NO CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS, acquire this license !!! JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE LICENSE, DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO "PACK" ALL THE TIME !!!
To have, and never need is the best condition in this life. How-ever, to need, and not have, can be deadly for you, your family, and/or others near and dear to you.

I was taught since 1968 and still practice to this day that your defense equals the level of attack; so you don't break a guys arm for insulting you or tear a guy up in a simple bar room brawl.
Always use the least amount of force to initiate an effective defense.

well...in law to claim self defense you must have made an attempt to escape the situation and you can only use enough force as necessary to escape. the attacker has to make an attempt to carry out the threat. for example: if a man tells you he's gonna shot you and pulls a gun. then its lawful for you to "take him down" etc. however if he says hes gonna shot you but has no means to carry out the threat then he cant be touched....at least thats what i remember from my law class in high school.....now what would i do....if some man had me pinned against a wall and cut me then i would do my best to placate him until i have the opportunity to get at least one arm free and upon getting it free his A** would be mine. i would do the most painful techniques on him that i knew and i would make realize that he picked the wrong person. when i finished the paramedics would be scrapping him up off the floor. that's just what i would do and consequences be damned.

As far as I had to to get out of that situation. This is the kind of thing martial arts were meant for, not bar brawls.
