Crime in New York City has been a concern of residents since the 19th century. Crime rates spiked in the 1980s and early 1990s, as the crack epidemic hit New York City, but have drastically reduced since then.

No way!....there are 50 more cities in the USA with populations greater then 1 million that have a higher crime rateh then NYC.
Like any other worldwide big city use common sense, be aware of your surroundings

It depends on where in Manhattan.
Archer, there are only about 10 or so cities in the USA with a population greater then 1 million.

Despite alot of perceptions that NYC is dangerous, I actually found it just the opposite when I stayed there on separate occasions. I've stayed mostly near the Met, Museum of Natural History, 52nd and Broadway, 34th Street.
Again, I kept alert but never had problems.

NYC's crime rate hit an all-time low in 2004. Today it's one of the safest cities in this country thanks partly to former Mayor Rudy Guilliani putting tens of thousands of police officers on the streets.

All depends. The City is as safe as any place else you just have to really pay attention to your surroundings. There are some places safer than others but if you follow your instincts you will be OK.

How is crime in anyplace you visit! Anywhere you go have its good and bad side. Like one person said use your common sense, don't walk around like you are scared, act like you being/fit in and you will be fine( that goes for anyplace you visit). You are not going to be mugged getting off the plane. Has anyone ever told you don't believe everything you see on TV. Have fun, and happy shopping!!
