I think it depends on the person. I started babysitting at 12 but only people who knew me well and knew I was responsible would let me do that. If it was someone I didn't know to well I would go with 15 as the age.

I was 11 when I first started babysitting my 3 year old stepsister. I was 14 when I first started babysitting for a family that at that point had 5 little girls. To be honest, I wouldn't let a teenager watch my kids at all, though. I would think for a mature kid who is up for the responsibility should be at least 14 or 15 and have some experience caring for children while the parents are home, first.

I didn't start babysitting until I was 12. Before that, I did take care of kids, but with an adult at home (parent working on a building project).

I would not have any kid under 18 care for someone else's infant who is not yet crawling. Unless you have cared for your own infant sibling, there is just too much you don't know. I had to call the police when I sat for a 1 month old because the baby was gasping for air. Never sat for a young infant again. This was a couple that my parents didn't know and my mom understood it was a much older baby or she wouldn't have let me sit.

I started babysitting my little brother when I was 11 my mom would let me stay home by myself with him, but it was only because I was very mature for my age and he was 3 when i was watching him so i didnt need to change diapers or anything like that. It all depends on the child babysitting and if there mature enough to know how to handle responsibility like that.

It depends on how responsible the babysitter is. If they have gone through a babysitting course and have recomendations from other parents then they may be acceptable as a babysitter. Another good idea is to stay in the house for about an hour watching the babysitter interact with the child or children and then make your final decision.

It depends on how many kids you babysit and for how long. If your parents don't think you are ready to babysit yet ask them if you can babysit an older child while there parents or your parents are there if you need help with anything.

I started babysitting my brothers and my moms friends kids when I was 10. But it really depends on how mature the child is.

You need to check with your state. Although many states do not specify a particular age, some do. If yours doesn't, I think it depends on the maturity level of the one babysitting. I also think its a good idea to take a babysitting class such as the one Red Cross offers.
