For the time being, your usual ID and Green Card suffices. No passport yet!

Currently a passport is only required for air travel. A valid drivers license or ID card, your alien card and your birth certificate should suffice for crossing the border by car.

I think that a valid renewal form, or conformation of that form, for your passport will do. I know that as a US citizen, all you have to do to go to Canada, is produce a letter that states that your passport is being processed, along with their acceptable ID.

The US govt. has pushed off the requirment for a passport.
I would strongly suggest you contact the Canadian counsel for the latest. Their number is in the phone book. If your passport is being processed you should have no problem.

You should be fine. I am not sure of the exact date but they pushed back the enforcement of the requirement for a passport because of the insane amount of requests.
