I've never seen any statistics showing the odds, and I'm sure no one in Vegas would take the bet.

Although it is kind of strange to create odds for something like this there are many factors that can affect that. You can look at the FBI statistics and get an exact number if you wish but even that won't be entirely accurate for YOUR situation. A lot will depend on where you live, your lifestyle, and circumstance.
For example if you live in say Newark N.J. (one of the higher rates there) and lead a dangerous lifestyle (gangs or crime) you will greatly increase your odds.
If you are law abiding and live a safe and crime free life and use good common sense and are careful who you hang with and where you go then the odds are very slim of that happening to you.
All my best

Well, I do not know the exact odds, but lets look at places like NYC. There are 8 million people in that city. Although their murder rate is down, it was around 1000-1500 people a year murdered there. So, the 1 in a million does not compute.

Also, there are 300 million people living in the USA now. Under their theory, there would only be 300 murders in the whole country every year. Believe me, there are thousands more then that that occur.

That said, if you want to know exact murder rates, do a search for the FBI's Uniform Crime Report stats. It will show you every part one crime in the country and give you exact figures.

Happy hunting...... no pun intended.

*edit.

To the guy below, yes.... and if you read my answer I said that it is DOWN... but years ago it was over a thousand every year. I was trying to give him easy figures to work with. Thanks for the thumbs down from you.

there are 300 million people in the US. Approx 16,700 people where murdered in 2006. Do the math.

And NYC had 597 murders last year, not 1500.

How could anyone give "nytrainop" a thumbs down for that answer. It was matter-of-fact with no guff at all.

All who gave thumbs down there (3), are insane.
