Quite ancient. Archaeologists have found ornaments/toys of this kind in excavations from numerous classical civilizations, including classical India and Hellenistic Rome. There are allusions to ornaments of this kind in the *Greek Anthology,* a collection (compiled in the 10th Century CE) of classical Greek epigrams and lyrics poems.
