I try to drive at the posted speed limit but so many people pass me so quickly that I've wondered if I should just turn on the hazard lights in heavy traffic.

Driving with your hazard lights on constitutes operating an unsafe motor vehicle. When these lights are on, your turn signals do not operate properly. They should only be used when the vehicle is standing still. They are hazard, not emergency lights.

Hazard lights just indicate that there is something wrong or that you are travelling more than 15 mph under the speed limit. I think you would be more likely to get a ticket for obstructing the flow of traffic than for having your hazards on, which would constitute unsafe operation because you can't signal your turns. I would encourage you to step up the pace if you are the slowest car on the road and cars really are whizzing by you because you are creating a hazard for yourself and for others by not flowing with traffic. This has all sorts of by-products...inexperienced drivers may not be able to handle it, road rage, inattention of other drivers may not anticipate you going so slow... If you are in a steady flow with the majority of traffic, you won't get pulled over. If traffic is light...then just keep truckin at the posted speed and stay right.

This would depend on the state you are in. I can tell you that I believe that most states have traffic laws that forbid you from driving in "normal traffic" situations with your hazards on. For example in Florida you can be cited for driving with your hazards on and it would result in an infraction violation and fine. Keep in mind that I would never write a ticket to someone for that but you never know so I would no recommend it. The reason they have these violations is that under normal conditions it can affect the flow of traffic and distract other drivers who may think you have some type of problem or emergency.
Good luck and all my best!

Unsafe Vehicle Operation
It could result in a drivers license recall and retest.
You can also get a ticket for going to slow and not keeping up with the flow of traffic

Try being a safe driver and keep up with traffic, you are an accident waiting to happen

I do this all the time and have yet to receive a ticket. I especially do it when I am lost and may have to make an unexpected turn. Most people politely pass - I live in a small town so most drivers are patient.

There really is no law against using your warning / emergency flashers while driving. But, I don't suggest using them all of the time as you will then not be able to use your turn signals and your break lights usually won't work.

And if that causes a traffic crash, you will be at fault.
