recently recieved a regular DUI in phoenix, AZ but I am from out of state, and am not back in Ohio. I was advised by a police acquaintance in phoenix that if i do not wish to deal with it, and if I do NOTHING about it, my drivers license in Arizona only will be suspended and I will have a warrant in Maricopa Cty (where Phoenix is), but that there would be no extradition or anyway it would follow me back to Ohio. Nothing would be on my record and I could more or less escape it all by not returning to that county for a while.
All I would need to do is avoid going back to Phoenix for a few years.
I know this is not the correct way to handle this, but can anyone with a legal background confirm this is a possible approach to avoid the dui being on my record and having to do fine/jail/classes for it? I was told as long as the warrant is out , there is no conviction - therefore nothing on my record in Ohio and also my drivers license in Ohio will not be effected.
True?

A regular DUI, as opposed to?. You most likely will have a warrant in the state of arrest, but it will not be serviceable everywhere. On the other hand, the driving privileges will be suspended in most, it not all 50 states.

The information that the officer gave you seems to be false. Most states have receprosity with each other on charges of this nature. In this case if you do not comply with the DUI your current license will be suspended for that charge. You indicate that you have an AZ license but are from Ohio so that confuses me. If this is the case your AZ license will definately carry a DUI suspension and if you attempt to get an Ohio license you will not be granted one, or if you already have one that will also be suspended. It is true that you may have a warrant issued from Phoenix on the charge that may not be extraditable but it will still affect your drivers license where ever you go and may have other repurcussions as well. Lets say you get pulled over in Ohio. A records check will show your warrant and suspended license for DUI. The officer probably won't be able to arrest you on the warrant due to the distance but can for the DUI suspension. Keep in mind a Judge won't be happy when you go before him for a DUI suspension and a warrant from AZ that you failed to comply with even if your from Ohio.
If what you are saying was true everyone that got arrested in AZ would simply move away so the law makes adjustments for that. I have also seen warrants for DUI from other states that the Judge made extraditable for one reason or another. That would result in a huge problem. My advice would be to comply with the charge and not have it hanging over your head and worrying you.
Good luck

Under ORC (Ohio Revised Code) Ohio has a mutual agreement with 40 other states (including Arizona) to store copies of BMV records in almost all the other 40 states (Ohio has Arizona's records). Therefore, Ohio can search warrants in the other 40 states. If you get another ticket, or when you go to renew your license, they can (and will) arrest you for your warrant. When an officer pulls you over, they have all the records of those 40 states on their computer. Then, you will have to face court in Arizona. So you better deal with it. I am a Ohio State Trooper

i Had the same exact situation but with California and Colorado. i got a DUI in Colorado with a Cali driver license. i still have my Cali drivers license and it never got suspended. i do have a warrant in Colorado but i really don't give a shitt because i don't plan on going back. you are also right about if you are not convicted it will not show on you record only things you have been convected for do. the only time that your DUI will follow you is if you get it in the state where you got your drivers license in witch case you wont be able to get a license in any other state. that has been my experience with it.

I believe that Arizona and Ohio have 'reciprocal' agreements, which means that if you fail to show in AZ that OH can (and will) suspend your drivers license.
It WILL be on your record and the outstanding warrant (if you don't appear) will show up in any background or criminal checks.
You've gotten some BAD advice. You need to take care of what you have pending.

Its all true except that your license will also be suspended in Ohio. Believe me, deal with this or you are going to be in a world of hurt down the road. And when they issue a warrant for you, it will not go away "in a few years". It will be in the system forever.
Your "friend" gave you bad advice.

I don't see why a driving infraction done in one state wouldn't follow you. You did the crime, now just deal with the consequences. Honestly, just pay the fine and have it be over and done with.
