It should be: to better the lot of our fellows through words and force. Of course, this isn't so admirable or sound anymore. I guess the quote is incomplete, then.
People should try to teach by example, to show love through their actions. They should be more concerned with their fellow man's suffering than with conversion, than with shouting out their morals, than with achieving sameness among people.
I may not agree with many premises of religion, but I think it COULD be a good thing if people approached it the proper way.

I think impatience in trying to improve anything is a flaw. While we can make small differences almost immediately, larger, far-reaching changes usually take time and there are no shortcuts.

It means don't screw with Mother Nature or in other words man should not attempt to effect or alter the Law of Karma no matter what one's intentions/motivations are.
Life has it's own Plan and it is only for man to corporate with that Plan.
