I think you have to check your surfboard in.
I've seen people bring snowboards and stuff like that. so i'm pretty sure you can. just call the airlines just in case.

There are size limitations on what you can check for luggage on flights. You may have to ship it separately via airfreight. Also know that airfreight on something like a surfboard can be too costly to be practical.
