I'm invited to a friend's engagement party. I sent an engagement card when they first became engaged (they've been engaged since December).
Is it necessary for me to bring a gift to the engagement party? If so, what is appropriate? The couple is registered already, but seems too early for registery items. The wedding isn't until June 08.

Bringing a nice bottle of their favorite beverage is an ample gift. Be sure to gift it in a nice bottle bag (using their wedding colors) and attach a little gift card.

Gifts are not necessary at engagement parties. I got engaged in December and we are having an engagement party in a couple weeks and married June 08 as well. Although a few people asked us where we are registered (which we are not yet...havent decided yet about that), we have told them to please not worry about gifts and just come celebrate with us and enjoy the party.

I don't think a gift is necessary. I think just attending is adequate. How much are couples thinking you are going to spend on their wedding? It seems that weddings are becoming more and more like a gift grab as opposed to celebrating the beginning of their life together.
A card would be a nice touch, but I don't think that you are obliged to bring an actual gift.

I don't really like engagement parties... I kind of think it's just an excuse to ask for gifts. I would probably do a smaller monetary gift...because you'll most likely buy a registry item for the bridal shower and then do a monetary gift for the actual wedding. Maybe something nice like picture frames or a gift certificate to a restaurant would be a nice idea.

No, no gifts are required for the engagement party - and since you already sent a car, just take yourself! It's just basically a party for everyone to get together and chat!

No gift. If you feel like you can't walk in empty handed, or don't want to, take a hostess gift like a box of candy or bottle of wine. You already sent a card which was a very nice gesture. You are def. not obligated to take a gift!
