White walls (of .course) and one wall is panelling. I am not allowed to paint. I have dark brown rugs and two green couches. There is a window approximately 6 ft long and 3 feet high. The apartment is semi underground. Any suggestions would be a HUGE help!! Keep the ideas coming

I had an apartment with paneling once, and I remember having a hard time decorating it so it didn't look like a dungeon! I would suggest lighter window treatments - even just a white sheer would help liven up the room, but keep your privacy. Get some big mirrors to hang on the paneled wall. Mirrors will make the room appear bigger and less dark. You can also get a series of long pictures to hang and try to cover that entire wall if possible. It will help if the pictures are very light in color scheme. Depending on the color of your floors, you may want to just store away the dark brown rugs you have and opt for some off-white or a lighter green to match the couches. Again, the dark brown is going to be too much for the already dark room. Get some lamps and place them in the corners of the rooms and use those as everyday lights. It will help keep all corners lit and bright, also making the room appear bigger and brighter. I would check out Target and other places like Home Goods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and WalMart for inexpensive items. Good luck!

I'm not allowed to paint either, but I went ahead and did. My living room and dining room blend together but there is an arch between, so I painted a turquoise on 2 walls of the living rom and did the three walls of the dining room and into the living room bright yellow. then I painted the arch sage and some of the shelves in the dining room are sage, and jsust kind of put those colors against each other to bring it in. If you plan to live there long enough, it's worth it to paint anyways. Or you can just get an accent color of paint in gloss and do your doorframes and window frames and leave the walls white, but use lots of pictures & mirrors & drapes. For my turquoise walls, I'm going to get some hula skirts and cut them short and use them as a valance over the windows. It sounds tacky, but it's coming together nice with my hawaiian theme and coconut monkeys!

1] get a set of sheer curtains for the window, with miniblinds underneath when you want privacy.
2] add some of your favorite brights, like
raspberry or rust
deep rose or tomato red
peach or coral
lt. gold or lemon
lime or jade green
aqua or turquoise
powder blue
lavender or purple
Use one or two of these colors for rug, possible sheers color, pillows, etc.
Add some bright paintings or framed posters with some of the colors in it.
Put a framed mirror up across fron the window, or on longest wall [ over sofa, maybe? ]
TIP: frame all items in similar manner, such as oak or walnut, brass or silver, same color enamel - you will be able to re- arrange items easily, and switch around when you move.

Depends what kind of style the Green couches and brown rugs are... if they are modern I would do alot of black iron stuff, and add a touch of color like maroon or lavander, then to accent the 6ft window I would go with looses drapes not curtains (Just loose cloth that you kinda just arrange to your liking) Blinds are so plain and curtains get expensive the bigger you need. But best advice, get alot of faux plants, you can get them at Wal-Mart and Target, the 6ft trees are my favorite, if you get a set of white christmas lights and put them on the tree, it looks really cute and cozy at night.
