Depends upon how you define a win....but for the sake of argument...

USA vs USAF. Most people would say the USAF because it has "air power" however the USA has helicopters. When it comes to a fight between a fighter jet and a copter, the safest thing for the fighter jet to do is shoot down the copter from a long way away. (Like the USAF shot down two USA copters a few years back, they did not even get close enough to correctly identify their targest.) The reason is if a fighter jet flies by and shoots at a copter, it gets ONE pass. If it misses the copter just rotates and sticks a missile up the rear of the jet every time. The USA also has a ton of surface to air missiles to shoot at the planes. Lastly, those planes have to land some place sometime. The USA has special ops who can infiltrate an airbase and blow up the planes on the ground. Or just shoot the planes with a 50 cal from 1000 meters away....Planes do not fly very well after a 50 cal has gone into its engine. Once the USA has neutralized the USAF aircraft, what exactly does the USAF have?

The whole basis of our warfighting plans is WE have air superiority. Lose that and he who has the best army wins.

Navy vs Marines. Both have air power but all the Navy has to do is stay in the ocean outside the range of the USMC Harriers. The catapult launched USN planes have far greater ranger than the Harriers. The USN would be able to hit the USMC but the USMC would not be able to hit the USN back. Since the USN would have the ability to pick when and where to fight, it would have the major advantage. It would be able to wipe out the Marines air power. However, destruction from the air should not be considered a win. If the Navy tried to move in sailors to claim their win, the USMC would wipe out the sailors. It would be a stand off, the USN would control the air but it has about ZERO assets to move in on the ground. That is what the Marines are for.

You did not ask, but the other combinations. USAF vs USN.
The USAF has the ability to hit any where in the world. So the Navy would not be safe trying to hide in the middle of the ocean. On the flip side, the USN does not have ability to hit everywhere so the USAF bases deeper inside the USA would be safe. Considering how long it takes to build a ship, the USAF would just pick them off, starting with the carriers. (USN has less than 300 ships, it would not take long.) USAF also has the F22, the newest greatest air to air fighter made. The USN is having to "make do" with F18 Super Hornets. (All the F14s have been retired.) So USAF wins, unless they go nuclear. Kind of hard to defend against sub launched nukes.

US ARMY vs US MARINES. Army would win just because it is a lot bigger and has more of everything.

Bottom line... boots on the ground "WIN" a war...Just bombing the crap out of someone from the air justs chews up the land.

It would be Marines/Navy. Marines have all same equipment as Army but just in, unfortunately, worst condition. The Air Force is not so much a combat based branch of the military than more of a support. The Army and Marines could go toe to toe for a bit on land. Reason being there are far many more soldiers in the Army than there are Marines in the corp. While that land battle was being fought, you also have to remember all Special force and Ranger units in the Army opposed to the Marines. The Marines are few, proud, and well trained. But just numbers on numbers, Army could defeat Marines. No offense to the Marine Corp. just looking at numbers. As far as the Navy and Air Force, the Navy has many winged fighting assets such as F-16's and anti-air devices. The Air Force is not combat based, they are more or less "the truckers of the sky", they move stuff and drop the occasional bomb. However, a B-52 bomber could take out a whole Navy carrier. Your answer: Army/Air Force.

sheer numbers is nice and all but espirit de corps is something that tips the scales...I've served as a Marine working around Army weaklings... the number 1 thing they would say to me was Gee I want to go into the Corps...But I was afraid to.

The Marines are far superior to the Army in several aspects.
1. Discipline
2. Morale
3. Training
4. the improvise-adapt-overcome attitude

that of course is not all....we are also much better at drinking, fighting, conserving resources, drinking, fighting, and drinking.

The Air force would be a force to be reckoned with if the battles were to take place within the U.S..... but with the Marine capability to strike immediately they could take out many air bases before the pilots suited up from their trip to the hair dresser...

I think that if you add the Navy to the factor the fight would be just way to one sided... that would be like adding insult to injury...

clear winner would be MY BELOVED CORPS and the Navy.

submarines which can not be detected would take out any radar, communication, satellites, any form of communication or navigation, then Navy and Marine Corps fighters would weaken the command Army preparing for the wrath of the Marines.

Control of the skies will win any war, training or real. The philosophy of Curtis LeMay is as applicable today as it was a generation-plus ago.

it would have to be the navy and marine corps because they are more highly trained and could take out radar and communications allowing them to move in and take out everyone
