I keep hearing about all the violence in the sympony and I'm truly amazed. Normally you would never think of the symphony as a place for violence, that would be more associated with a rock concert.

Oh the symphony is full of violence. One particular one I can't think of is about a forbidden love affair in which the guy goes to the guillotine for. And then it continues with his travels through hell.

That's just one small example.

But to answer why; well just like today violence and sex sells, it always has.

Of course... listen to Night on a Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky, or the fourth movement of Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov , or Mars from The Planets by Holst.

Also, I have heard that some, like the 1812 overture, have tympani bums.

I think that it's unfair to use the homeless seeking shelter in musical instruments as instruments themselves.
