wait until you have a ceremony site, date and time - that sets the formality. Once you know where & when - you're good to GO!

Its never to early. i have seen a lot of women buy a dress they are in love with and they don't even have a man yet. Reason being is that dresses come and go in seasons so if you find something you really like it might not be there in 6 months.
Now on a more realistic basis, about a year is a good jumping off point that way it has time to arrive and then time to be fitted/altered.
If you are like me, on a budget, then you should look out of season. So remember they are retails stores so they are a season ahead of themselves. I am getting married this winter so i went last winter. Reason being, they were already getting their new spring stuff out during November/December last year and so all of the Winter dresses were on sale. I ordered it in November and it just came in this may (but that's cause its a designer dress, other dresses may not take that long). Having it in May helped because now I have time to have it fitted, know that i love it, and have any necessary adjustments made that i want.
Also, know that it is not a perfect world and sometimes bad things do happen (like lost dresses, etc) so early is never to early.

Any time after the ring is on your finger, the date is set, and you have started to plan your wedding. You can shop for the wedding dress at any point after that.
Unless you find a fantastic deal, I would NOT recommend actually ordering the gown until about 4 to 6 months before the wedding. Many brides work on losing weight and/or toning up before the wedding...and alterations are EXPENSIVE so you want to keep the alterations to a minimum. If you buy a gown a year before the wedding, then drop a bunch of weight (or, heaven forbid, gain a bunch of weight) you may end up spending more in alterations than the cost of your gown. Just a word of caution.
Happy Shopping and congrats on the wedding!

The dress store will tell you how long before you need to order. They take into account shipping times and alteration time that will be needed. They don't encourage ordering too early because if your weight changes and you're in a different size you may have troubles having the alterations done or the dress fitting at all. Also, if you get the dress too early someone has to store it, and when the wedding day comes, someone has to steam all the wrinkles out of it.

As son as you get that rock on your finger, start looking for that perfect dress!! It may take you a little bit to find just the right one, the one that makes you feel like a princess. Most dress stores will tell you to allow them at least 6 monthes to get your dress in, let alone make any alterations to it. Sooooo, the anwer to your question would be, I don't think you can shop to early for your wedding dress.
Congratualtions by the way!!

It depends on when your wedding is and what your plan is. For example, if you're getting married in 2 years and you want to lose 30 pounds, wait for a little while. If you're generally going to stay the same size, you have a place to store the dress and can afford it, then go for it!

I'd say no more that 9 months in advance. And once you find the dress STOP looking because if you keep second guessing yourself you'll be miserable in the dress you fell in love with in the first place because you found something after the fact.

shop as early as you like - i have 10yr old nieces picking out dresses in magazines and saving them to a scrap book
But don't buy more than a yr before the date. you could change (your figure or your mind) and you don't want buyers remorse for your wedding gown.

You should be properly engaged with a wedding date set, which is often eight months to a year away.

start looking just dont buy until a year before the wedding i got mine picked out but i have 2 years. and its unfortunate cuz im on the edge of my chair every couple weeks making sure its still made. however i can gain weight and waste a lot of money, also you dont want dust to gather on it, or to accidentally spill something on it.
