How about this? We round up all the illegals in the US and send half to Bin Laden. Then we outfit ours as soldiers and Bin Laden does the same with his. Then we take them all out into the desert somewhere and they fight it out. The team that remains with a few alive at the end gets go to Mexico.

No loss of valuable robots that way!

If you mean robot vs robot: Yes it is silly, after the robots were finished we'd still have to resort to humans
If you mean robot vs human: No, If we have a nothing but automated killing machines, so we don't have to die, go right for it. It sounds callous, but I don't want to see good honest men sent to a battle where a robot could suffice. War, all war takes some of our best and brightest away from us.
Believe you me, we're less than ten years from having truly autonomous warfare, but if we go too far: Skynet!

I don't think it would be stupid - it would definitely save human lives. But the military would have to have a lot of money to invest in these robots.

Assuming of course that there were such a thing, soldier robots, the only thing would then be how would you declare the winner?
A better option would be to send the President of each country at war, and let them fight it out. I'd bet that they would do everything in their power to avoid a war, if their own butt was on the line.

Some specialized robots have been doing that right along. What else do you call a drone aircraft equipped and programmed to attack a specific target?

No, it would make a great deal of sense. We already have drones flying without pilots, I'm sure remote controlled tanks might be a good next step.

We spend ridiculous amounts of money on defense as it is...robots would be very expensive - it would be nice to not have so many soldiers die, though.

People would still die when the robots killed them, though...
