Prayer works, but only under "certain" conditions that allow for random chance or medical possibilities. Such as when random chance will be a factor (such as with diseases like cancer that have a spontaneous remission). Remission is like a miracle, so god can be praised. It is also a medical possibility. Humans don't re-grow things, it is not a medical possibility. A re-grown limb would be a miracle, cancer remission is not. Why do Christians limit the power of god by only praying for things that are possible without god?

Im not sure I completely understand the question but I will try to answer it. I have never heard of God hating amputees. To say that would be an ignorant assumption. God does not cause nor does he want anyone to suffer with amputation. Or any sickness for that matter.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
Clearly God sent Jesus so he would die for our sins and so we could have eternal life and be healed of any sickness. John 3:16 is also a good verse to look at.
The problem is that we need to have faith the size of a mustard seed( believe me its tiny). If we only had that miniscule amount of faith then ALL THINGS would be possible
I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me - Phillipians 4:13
But many times we question. We ask for healing and in our minds say to ourselves this cant possibly work. We have been brainwashed to believe that miracles cant happen. But fact is they can and will and do happen. However people always expect some kind of thunderous voice from the clouds. But even something small as a child being born is a miracle.
And yes Cancer is #2. Many time cancer is a consequence of past sins. As is any other sickness. For example my uncle died of lung cancer because he smoked for 20 yrs. God tells us that our bodies are our temples and we should take care of them or else things will go wrong. As for children who get cancer or other sicknesses it can stem from genetics you know things that came into the family at some point and run along into the rest of the family line until someone prays about it deeply and breaks the chain. This would be called spiritual warfare but thats another topic for another day.
Anyways I tried my best to answer this honestly the way I believe so I hope this helps answer your question.
p.s. My grandpa has an amputated leg and some toes on the other leg and he moves faster than I do lol. Its true. The man is a trooper.
p.s.s. A lizards tail is not a very important limb at all so it really doesnt matter if it regenerates. And even still it doesnt always regenerate. Many time the tail is lost completely. And they live just fine without it.

Since I'm an atheist, I can't really answer your question, which is addressed to theists, but since you used the lizard regrowing a tail point, I thought that you might be interested to know that some day human amputees may be able to do the same thanks to medical gene therapy and the evolutionary relationship of humans and reptiles. Less than 2% of nucleobase sequences in the human genome are involved in protein production (active genes). The rest is a landscape of fossilized genes from our distant ancestors. Included is the deactivated gene that allows for limb regeneration, an ancient reptilian trait. Molecular biologists are studying this deactivated fossil gene in humans in order to see how it may be reactivated so that amputees can re-grow limbs.

Because getting faith for healing is hard. We are often distracted with other things, and at other times rather self-indulgent. There are many things to do to develop faith in such blessings as healing. Until the start of the 20C no one in the christian church in the UK was even believing that Christ's healing ministry or the healings in the early church were "for today". It has been improving in the last 100 years, so most lively denominations believe that healing is available today. Most don't teach much about it, though.
There also has been false teaching to the effect of "God is teaching me through this illness" or "God is glorified in my standing strong in this illness" or "God is calling me home". Many christians still think these ways, but you won't find Jesus teach any of them in the gospels. If you believe those kind of things, you are just going to gracefully or (more likely I think) stoically accept things.
Healing is also available via some supernatural gifts, where people in churches have been taught, and are believing for those gifts. That is still rare, especially in denominations created before 1900. The healings that way are rather piecemeal though. This route was provided by God I think since even in the early church some people had weak undeveloped faith. With a healing anointing, or a word of knowledge etc, it was possible to get healed with a meagre faith.

yes, it's just like the "why did god create disease?" question. Most religious people will answer "he didn't, we did through sin", which is the easiest "way out".
As much as we would like to keep our four extremities intact, look young forever, never suffer from disease or see those we love in any of these situations, it will still happen, and it happens every day, people. Prayer won't take it away, prayer and religion are a placebo. Staying positive through hard times is all about the the power of suggestion.

This question gets asked almost every other day. This is actually two questions.
As far as amputees are concerned, the short answer would be, if God took away all of the challenges from our lives, we humans would probably become weak and lack appreciation for what we have. Granted, different people have different challenges, but we all have some difficulties to overcome. Why did you single out amputees from, say poor people, or ugly people, or people with below average intelligence, [or blind, or deaf,] etc.?
As far as cancer is concerned, why is dying of cancer more shocking to you than the hundreds of people who die every day of old age? Why is one way to die worse that another? We all die sooner or later from something.
===edit===
Cancer is the number two (2) cause of death in the U.S. because we in the U.S. get to live long enough for our bodies to wear out and break down naturally. In other parts of the world, the majority of people die of something ELSE long before they get to live long enough for their DNA to break down and develop cancer.
This seems like such a common sense answer, I don't understand why no one likes it. I don't understand why you think that no one has ever given you a sufficient answer to your question.

Jesus tells us to keep praying for His kingdom.....thy kingdom come.........The reason why is that God's kingdom is the solution for ALL mankind's problem. Right now we live in a world that is ruled by Satan.
John 12:31..........Now there is a judging of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
John 14:30..........I shall not speak much with YOU anymore, for the ruler of the world is coming. And he has no hold on me,
1 John 5:19.............We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the [power of the] wicked one.

Heck, lots of animals can regrow body parts. Why does evolution hate people? We all came from a common descent. Honestly, humans are better than animals, so with natural selection, shouldn't our DNA have mutated so we could regrow body parts?
I've known plenty of people who have been healed from cancer.
Your argument loses.

Is it just me,...
or is anyone else thinking that the "Why doesn't God heal amputees?" question has been posted enough now on Y!A R&S to qualify it as a "drinking question"?
Here, I'll even get the ball rolling:...

Indeed.
Yet they still stubbornly insist that prayer works for the sick.
Hogwash is what that is.
Prayer does nothing since the destination is imaginary.
You'd be better off just spending time with the person who is sick. After all you are real and god is imaginary. Who do you think the afflicted person will appreciate more?
