It's a really silly game of semantics.
Yes, I believe in myself, my wife, my kids,......etc.
I don't believe in anything supernatural.
Isn't it just a silly, little circular argument to say "atheists still believe in something because believing in nothing is still believing"?
Come on guys............grow up!
Atheism IS an absence of belief.
Okay?

Captain flatulance.........When my mother was dieing of cancer I did no "bargaining". If my wife were dieing I wouldn't either. She'd feel very insulted if I did.

Because if they can think to themselves that we are somehow convinced of something other than Christianity, then we are in the same boat as them, and they can then argue why their belief is better than ours.
Admitting that atheists do not have a contradictory belief, but in fact have no belief at all, does not allow them to make this argument. It basically puts them in the position that they belong in, wherein they have to justify their belief against all the contradictory evidence.
Basically, atheists have nothing to prove. But Christians want to believe we do.
Edit - to Captain Flatulence, we don't bargain with anyone, is that so hard to understand?

i'm catholic Christians insist on you reason they stay a distinctive adventure in existence and an exceedingly happy one with Jesus (please do no longer prejudge this reason you probably did no longer adventure our existence) and that they are asked to share this exhilaration with each physique... perchance a number of Christians insist lots and do not know the thank you to particular what they pick for you... As for blaming the devil we don't reason God created us with a loose will... So real what you suggested no person made us do something undesirable, in spite of the undeniable fact that it fairly is that the guy desperate to stick to the line of evil in a definite time particularly of listening to God voice

As a christian, I have never told an atheist that they still believe in anything. It is not for me to judge you or anyone else. As individuals we all are able to chose what if anything we believe in. For myself I am content believing in God, but that's for me and it may not be for you. Some people chose to believe in God or not depending on what has happened in there life. And that too is their choice. True Christians will not judge you.
Some people need cold hard facts and to see for themselves before they can or will believe in anything. I'm just not one of those people. So long as both of us are happy and neither one of us are hurting anybody else to me there is no problem. And I will not push my beliefs about God on anybody who doesn't want to hear them. But if you were to ask me then I would let you know.

my silly game of semantics
Why do you contradict yourself in your question?
you say Atheism is the absence of belief, but earlier you state that "Yes, I believe in myself, my wife, my kids, ....etc." According to your definition a true atheist would not believe in any of those things. I do understand that's not what you meant in your definition, I just thought I'd screw with you and your "semantics."
By the way I'm not a christian or an atheist. I choose to look for my own answers, not anyone else's. But I do enjoy reading others' search for answers while on my own search.

I am sorry that you feel that way. I am a Christian and I do my best not to throw my Bible at you. I do apologize for those who have offended you. And I can tell you anyone you have come into contact with who claims to be a Christian and shunns you, is definately not a Christian. I have studied atheism and I know what it is based on at the same time I know what Christianity is based on, I have chosen to believe in God. You have not, who am I to judge you? Not my place and not any Christians place... The Bible says judge not lest ye be judged.and also to only judge a man by his fruit.I dont know you and/or your fruit. so I hope that I can help change your opinion on "Christians." I wont judge you and you dont judge me. ok? We can agree to disagree..?!

You should believe in what makes you feel comfortable. Whether it's a higher being or not is up to you. Nobody should dictate who or what you believe in just to make themselves feel better.
I think that some groups of people impose what they think is just as opposed to allowing others to choose their own path. This is ridiculous because not everybody will believe in a god and will look to evolution or just what works in their everyday life.
Don't let others influence who you are.

If you are an atheist you believe God does not exist ! Although I'm not sure about that, as most kids imo have times when they think and realise God exists, before their admiration of adults leads them to abandon their own intuitions.
I'm not sure you can also have absolute mathematical proof of anything. We have to trust what people tell us (although we check a lot so we don't believe inanities) about many things, as we are only individuals.

Sounds like your mind is made up so there's no point in trying to change it. Having said that, consider this:
Your wife is diagnosed with cancer (I'd say "God forbid" but that would be meaningless to you.) People go through five emotional stages when dealing with a life changing event such as cancer.
Denial - you deny the diagnosis
Anger - you get angry over the diagnosis
Bargaining - you start "making deals", i.e. "Get me through this and I'll..."
Depression - You get depressed
Acceptance - Finally you accept the inevitable.
It is widely accpeted that this process is universal to all people.
To atheists, I pose a simple question, "If there is no God, with whom are you bargaining?"
Chew on that for a while!

Semantics is all they have anymore.
And that is the #1 sign that their cult is spiralling downwards to inevitable oblivion.
When you shine the light of reality on mythology, it just looks silly. And that is what is happening today.
Let's hope that one day soon, christianity will be tossed onto the ash-heap of history, where it belongs.
