I am not the one thinking of doing this!!!! I was in church sunday and during prayer, the police stormed in guns drawn and waving them look for suspect who in fact had ran in before them that they had already had pulled over for traffic stop. If they felt he was armed, they should have removed him from vehicle and cuffed him immed. I felt they had no RESPECT for the church. Could they not have secured the perimeter and come in and talk to someone. Then they tasered the kid in front of the whole congregation because of the chase, but he was no longer resisting. He was clearly WRONG as two left shoes, but I feel like they could have caused an unnecessary hostage situation cornering someone who they originally pulled over for a warrant for a missed traffic court. The police hit two parishoner cars speeding into the church lot!!

There is no boundaries for direct pursuit, but due caution must always be exercised.

There is more to this than you have provided us. What is your source for this story? In general however, police have the right to pursue anyone suspected of violating the law. The fact that it's a church has no bearing. It just as well could have been a Burger King, an office building, a school, or your house. If a violator enters a building to flee from the police, case law is very clear on this issue......they have the right to enter the building to pursue, with or without their guns drawn.
Sorry......separation of church and state won't get you off the hook on this one.

Depends...
At the time the police possibly know just a little more than you do and really need to pin this guy down ASAP.
Look at how many crimes and easy policies we have moaned about for letting bad guys go now you're moaning about grabbing one when needed.
Not a nice situation, nor good but... Possibly a necessary evil to get the bad guys back where they belong. And show the others that cops WILL and CAN find and contain you wherever you go.

If they have the guns they have the power - even if it is "pseudopower" to do pretty much whatever they want to do. It sounds to me like a person was running to avoid arrest. When they do that they are not following the law and can be arrested an charged with "flight from prosecution" and that is a felony.

it depends. If theyve tried to stop him / her and theyve failed to stop then for all the police officer knows it may be more than a traffic violation. You should give the police a break, youd be quick to complain if your house had been broken into and they turned up four hours later scratching their backsides, they have to enforce all laws not just the ones people want to obey when it suits them

It depends on the circumstances. It's unlikely that they would do this unless there was serious information that the person fleeing was armed and posed a serious threat. But yes, in the right circumstances, it is possible.

Are you thinking of hiding out in church. haha. I don't think you are safe. If this has already happened to someone you know then I think it was probably more than a traffic violation. They told you porkies.

Yes.
For the protection of the people in the church.
Think about it - if the guy is fleeing the police then they would have a potential hostage situation.

if the person was fleeing yeah.
going into a church does not give a criminal amnesty. but if the guy was wanted on something like a bench warrent and was spotted in a church going to services, we would wait to arrest him till it was over.
iit does not matter what the crime they commited was, becuase now they are commiting a worse crime. running from us.
