Thats easy Kevin. Just contact your State Fish and Wildlife Department. They can tell you what fish have been planted in the river, if any, and what native runs the river has. They can also give you information of their future plans for that river, or lake. Its easier to fish if you know there are fish and know what type of fish are there. Hope this helps....

Call the your state environmental department, in New York the agency is called the Department of Environmental Conservation, in other states probably similar. They should know if there is fish in the river and also what type of fish, and if the water is polluted or not.

Either fish it and see or ask around.

Wigglers are best with finding fish in the river. (around here) So it may not be a bad idea trying it.

toss out some bread crumbs and if the fish eat you can say the river has fish. And another look for bubbles coming to top of lake.

Alot of times birds can be a good clue... if you see birds working the water, you can be pretty sure fish are there... if the water is clear enough you can probably see them too...
