We don't know for certain just yet.

Heck, we can't even quite get to the Big Bang itself, due to a lack of a cohesive theory of quantum gravity.

However, I think that the evidence I have seen suggests that the Inflaton model of the Big Bang is most likely correct, which means the Inflaton exists eternally, and that our universe is only one immeasurably small portion of that.

Once we find a Grand Unified Theory (GUT), which combines the Electronuclear force with Gravity, we'll be a lot closer to an answer. If you want an answer to your question, go earn a PhD in Cosmological Quantum Physics and help do the research, or, you'll simply have to wait.

Well M Theory suggests there were many (probably an infinite number) of other universes. They were probably always here since there is no suggestion there ever really was a beginning.

Added: Since time is related to the Big Bang, it really isn't meaningful to talk about "before" in exactly the way you mean it.

Time, like space and matter, emerged from the Big Bang. There is no 'before' in that sense, anymore than there's any 'outside'.

I remember Stephen Hawking was once asked this. I found his reply mentioned in a forum on www.arcanumcafe.org:

"Stephen Hawking joked once, 'Asking what happened ten seconds before the big bang is like asking what's ten miles north of the north pole.'"

What a profound question. Let me think. Wow. Even more profound. I do believe that you have proven the existence of god.

Why do religious people do that? They ask idiotic questions to which people know there is no answer and figure that its something 'profound' when it isn't.

Here's a little hint....

I don't know DOES NOT EQUAL god did it.
