We took our puppy to the vet the day after we got him. He was dewormed and seemed fine. We noticed about 4 days later that he had small drops of blood in his stool and some mucus. His attitude is the same, playing, eating, drinking. We took him to the vet and were told it's probably Coccidia due to stress. He told us to change the food we were giving him. It has not worked. There seems to be as muhc if not more blood now. I have read about Albon, but dont know why the vet didnt give us any when we brought him in. We are taking him again tomorrow to get some sort of medication. My main problem is if it is caused by stress, how am I supposed to train him to be alone and sleep in his crate when I am causing him stress by doing these things. I feel like I cant train him because I am making it worse. Any suggestions?

He is most likely stressed right now because he is so young and hasn't had the time to grow with his littermates. I think you need to take him to a different vet and get him some Albon. Diet doesn't play much of a role when the coccidia count is at a high. Once he has time to adjust to his new life (in a couple of weeks) then it would be good for you to start his training. Right now he just needs a break and to many things are coming at him at once. Go to a different vet and go from there. Good luck

Edit: DAWGPRO coccidia can be caused by stress. Coccidia is a normal bacteria that is in the intestinal tract. When the immune system is compromised or isn't working up to its best these bacteria can multiply and start causing problems. This compromised immune system can happen from stress, illness or many other things. Most likely in this case it was stress related because he is a puppy going through major changes in his life. Coccidia does and can happen from stress. Do some research on it. Good luck

Coccidia is a bacterial parasite that lives inside the intestine tract of dogs and can remain undetected until stress or illness can cause the cells to shed and produce signs that coccidia is present. So no, stress does not cause coccidia, but it does cause it to become active and produce symptoms of the infection.

Coccidia is becoming more resistent to Albon. I use a new drug Ponazuri on my puppies for treatment and it has shown a much higher success rate in curing Coccidia, not to mention it is only a 2 day treatment versus the 7-10 day treatment of Albon.

Also Coccidia is found by having a fecal done on the puppy/dog.

Unfortunately, your puppy was taken away from his/her mom and littermates to soon and therefore is suffering a greater amount of puppy stress from its new surroundings.

It sounds like possibly you need to find a different veterinarian because changing food will do nothing for Coccidia. Although they may have been referring the change in food to the puppy stress and diahrrea not the coccidia. I would call a vet and ask them about the drug Ponazuri.

SIX WEEKS OLD???!!! Your pup should still be with 'mum'!!! This is far too young to be separated; these symptoms, I know only too well. Your puppy should have a certain natural immunity from its mother. However, at so young, any number of factors could be causing this problem. It sounds like a possible enteritis infection which is certainly not caused by stress. Your vet MUST sort this out now! If not, please consult another vet before matters get worse.

Anything like this needs to be nipped in the bud. Please take your puppy back to a vet NOW! My first Yorkie (31yrs ago) suffered with this and it caused him continuous problems throughout his life. Thankfully, veterinary science has advanced so much since then. Take advantage of the solutions available now.

I wish you and your pup all the best.

My puppy always had blood & mucus in her stools for a week after she uses Drontal. It could be a reaction to that.

Also, he should quite honestly never have left his mother until he was 7-8 weeks old at least. That could be a part of it.

To me that sounds a lot like hookworms you need to take your puppy to another vet.
