dont try fad diets, they will make you put on more weight.
change your lifestyle (diet and exercise) and you will lose weight and not gain it back.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

losing weight after a baby is very hard, if you breast feed you are just starting your body into a healthier place, but if you don't your body will store all the fat you gained while pregnant, In either case you need to get up and move. Cut back on your eating just a little, make sure you are still eating healthy and move around. Take the baby to the mall in a stroller and walk the mall, some malls have miles marked off because it has become a real safe place for people to walk and exercise, and it is airconditioned. Also you can carry the baby in a carrier on your chest, I did this with my first baby and we really bonded too. I could do my grocery shopping and everything with the baby strappe to my chest. Also don't be afraid to ask people, grandparents, aunts uncles,ext... to watch the baby for a few minutes while you get out or to swimming or anything. It is important to your well being. Also I do not advertize this but I have done it my self and it works. Weight Watchers has programs for women, pregnant women, and nursing women. They work. And since you have the internet, you can look up some exercises that can be done in your home. I use a broom and some large cans when I exercise in my house. And another trick that some mothers don't know about, if you are tired all the time and you don't know why but it prevents you from exercising, keep the baby up with you, not all babies need to nap all day long. My first child stayed away from 7 am to 11 pm never took a nap. I was sleep deprived for a long time. My doctor told me to just keep her on my schedule, if I was awake, the baby was awake, end of story, I was able to get some rest and some exercise, everthing started to balance out. sorry the spell check don't work today.

Yes, I'd have to agree with heatedwirez above.
I've tried several diets, but the one that worked best for me was simply watching calorie intake versus calorie burning. There are several websites and/or software that can help you out with that. I used http://www.fitday.com . Based on my age/weight/exercise level I set my goal at 1200 calories per day and it really was not that difficult to keep up and the pounds shed off. I think it works because the logic behind it is simple and you are not restricted from eating any one particular food. You just end up making wiser food choices if you want to meet your caloric goal and yet not go hungry. Also, it gives you the option of splurging (within reason obviously--no 7-scoop ice cream sundaes!) every now and then if you do some extra exercise (calorie burning) that day.
Also, an added bonus of using the web/software was that it'll automatically calculate your nutrition intake so that you can also monitor such things as protein vs. fat vs. carbs; if you're getting enough vitamins; etc. Good luck!

I tried to lose weight also. I did everything like diets, going to the gym, not eating at all but it didn't work. So I adapted a new strategy: I'll eat whatever I want when I feel like it, just a little bit to satisfy...Of course I don't eat bread anymore and I drink at least 2L of water a day.I think it was just the thought that I couldn't lose weight that made me not to.So I let it go and now I have the weight I wanted.
Good luck !

To successfully lose weight, you must carry out
a plan to balance your caloric intake with exercise.
Ideally, dieting should be done by eating a nutritionally
balanced, low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.

Well if your energy intake (food and drink) is less than your energy expenditure (the amount of energy you use) then you will lose weight fullstop.
So have a look at what you eat and how much exercise you do. You may need to exercise more, or eat less, or both. Clearly one of those.
