Jack Russells as you know are VERY determined little creatures, being used as (ratters) they will chase just about any rodent they see, so I am not sure if an electric fence will work.
Why don't you contact a Jack Russel group such as the one listed below or a Jack Russell breeder that way you can discuss what you want the fence for and if they possibly have other alternatives or maybe the electric fence is perfect.
For me NOTHING is better than speaking ot a bunch of different owners of the breed that I have for actual (hands on) advice.
people that do NOT have the breed can IMO give you 1/2 assed advice....and that includes me, because I have Tibetan Mastiffs so an electric doesn't do anything for any issues I might have
Good luck

I also had an electric fence for my dog.. I had a wolfXmalmute. Some dogs are definately smarter and more active than others. Your Jack Russel is a very smart active dog, as was my Wolf X The thing I found with the electric fence is that if the dog learns that if the runs fast enough through the barrier of the electric fence the shock is either short term or non existant. Slower dogs such as Basset hounds or bull dogs never achieve the speed needed to break through the shock range of the fence without feeling the shock of electricity so they never learn the speed/shock ratio trick.. It only takes one or two escapes for the faster smarter dogs to figure out this flaw in the fencing and from that time on the fence will be useless to you

We used to have a foxy/jack russell cross and we never put up an electric fence we just had a 5 foot wooden fence around the whole property. Even that didn't always stop her as she would find ways of jumping over it or digging under it. also she would come through the catflap in the garage and run out the open garage door. ...Basically what i'm trying to say is they are very stubborn and an electric fence probably won't work that well either.
Good luck

I used to dog sit a Jack Russell and the owners had an electric fence...every time he saw something really worth going after, he would run right throught the "fence" and get shocked. Then he would realize what happened and try to get back inside the area, all the while getting shocked....I felt so bad for that dog

Don't get a fence, it won't work by stopping the dog from escaping and the dog will get shocked when it runs through. Jack Russells are single-minded, stubborn animals and if he sees something to chase he'll go for it, regardless of the fence.
You would be better off taking him to obedience training classes. They are quite bright dogs and can learn easily, it's just that they have a will of iron.

Electric fence, isnt that a bit drastic pal.
It depends on the character of the animal and how quick your pet is to learning from mistakes. If your pet is shocked on the fence depending on the voltage you are intending on having, it could just probably shock him senseless that he wont go near the fence or could possible kill him as Jack Russells are small dogs.
I would seriously consider what you want to do before going ahead with the idea. why not just put up a brick wall with security electric wiring on top, that would solve your problem easy.

I have a jack Russel mix and for my dog the electric shock had no effect in certain situations. We did all the pre training and he aced everything fine.. until there was a squirrel running by. Then he just went for it. The only reason I could even see he got shocked was he kind of twitched, but kept on running after the squirrel. After a couple of these incidence I figured no point in shocking the dog if it doesn't have the desired outcome.

Terrible idea!
Jack Russells, like many "prey" oriented dogs, will go through anything, even pain, to catch their prey, so the fence won't stop them if they are chasing something.
What it will do is keep them from coming back home once they are calm, then they will remember how the shock hurt and refuse to go through again into the yard.
Terrible idea -

who would want to put a jack russle behind an electric fence. if they are well loved then they will stay inside the boundaries of ur house. jack russles are easily excited so they run through electric fences and get shocked. they then try to get out but are still being shocked. it may even cause them to die
