Since you asked this question in R&S, so obviously you are seeking a spiritual reply.
Love does not have its roots in harmones, heart or mind. Love is a divine feeling radiating from the divine source
All loves be it love with our partner, our children, our parents, our friends or our possession...has been originated from Source.. but of course it has been polluted by our mind and heart....But the original divinity remains intact
Love's roots lie in the explanation given by Tantra. .. Adi-shakti in the beginning of universe separates from Shiva (consciousness)... and she carries on her manifestation with a longing to go back to the source
This immense longing of shakti to go back to Shiva is the real source of Love.
Since shakti is all in the universe... we see love spread in the universe.... be it atoms, living beings or we humans. Since human are more refined....they are nearer to feel it more.
So Love is a divine gift.... and we should not be ashamed to love any one... just we have to understand its true meaning.. then the love will become Ocean of Love

Love is a profound feeling of tender affection for or intense attraction to another. People in love are often considered to have "good" interpersonal chemistry. Love is described as a deep, ineffable feeling shared in passionate or intimate interpersonal relationships. In different contexts, however, the word love has a variety of related but distinct meanings: in addition to romantic love, which is characterized by a mix of emotional and sexual desire, other forms include platonic love, religious love, familiar love, and the more casual application of the term to anyone or anything that one considers strongly pleasurable, enjoyable, or desirable, including activities and foods. This diverse range of meanings in a single word is commonly contrasted with the plurality of Greek words for Love, reflecting the word's versatility and complexity.-

Haddaway had the same problem you know. :P
Love is something that comes with no explanation. When you find love, you know it's love.
That's the mushy answer, the not so romantic...
It's a chemical reaction in the brain. Physical and emotional elements combine and trigger certain chemicals that cause the feeling of love.

i dont think "love" can be described in laymans terms... the only way to really know what love is... is to actually experience love.. its a feeling more than an actual action...

To actually understand Love one has to go to the source of love. Love in this word becomes a perverted reflection of the Absolute Love. It is contaminated with the desire to exploit in this realm. Though one can learn the art of being in this world and not of it and learn to love all. But first we have to learn to love the Ultimate love, Also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc.) God or our Creator is the highest personification of Love. We just have to attract that Love towards us. God already loves everyone equally. But because we consciously are not seeking after Him then He just reciprocates with us as we desire. so seek Pure Love also known as Bhakti (Devotion) and you will be satisfied and in Pure eternal Love. Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada tells how to get that love. asitis.com you can read on line also write me for a link to get it.

Only when we see other human beings like the souls, we can have love for them. Love means spiritual love, it is elevated, pure love and by giving that love we don't ask anything in return. We simply love, like our Spiritual Father loves His EVERY child. But only when we are overflowed with this love, and God is the only one who can give sooooo much of that pure love, we, the souls can give that love to others. All the rest is love of the body consciousness which leads to sorrow, either because of attachment or because of vice of lust. Is attachment or lust virtues? The soul is incorporeal and he has nothing to do with the body of other soul. We receive body to give happiness to yourself and others, not to give sorrow. This is the teachings of the Supreme Father, the Supreme Soul, God Shiva! www.bkwsu.org www.brahmakumaris.org
Brother soul, don't waste your time. When you recognize the Father you will not have question to ask! Everything then will become clear to you! Good luck once again!

Love is not an esoteric subject to be understood. It has to be felt. It is our true nature without the covering of interlect and reasoning. So peep inside your heart and you'll see that it has always been there...probably even prompting you to ask this question.
Good luck!

Love is to desire the highest and best thing for the sake of the beloved. For all that I have and all that I am I give to you because I love you. Love is an act of the will and authentically it involves sacrifice

Love is a biochemical reaction in the brain. Neurologically, it is a neuroemotive cost-benefit analysis -- 'will this person provide more emotional energy to me than I must expend to receive that emotional energy, and will the person feel the same'.
Ultimately, it's meaningless and purposeless -- just the flow of electricity and chemicals around your brain. But it's a very PLEASANT flow of electricity and chemicals, all the same.

...I love you whether or not you love me
I love you even if you think that I dont
Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you, but I dont mind
Why should I mind, why should I mind
What is love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway
What is love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway
Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear
Never worry never be sad
The answer is they cannot love this much nobody can
This is why I dont mind you doubting
And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be
The door always must be left unlocked
To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you
And not to spend the time just doubting
