Introduce the dog and cat slowly... hold the dog and cat and watch their reactions.... pet both of them at the same time... and talk to them... Then the next time... maybe a few hours later, do it again... and again.... then just let them down and "feel each other out" so to speak...watching them. The puppy may get a bit rambunctious which the cat may not like... ... Some dogs and cats take to each other right away... others... well... They are natural enemies.... Keep doing this for a few days... and see what happens.

I agree that you shouldn't keep a puppy outdoors. He needs to know that you love him. After he's grown enough to defend himself you could... For training the puppy outdoors, make him a house or buy one, with a pen around it; and put him in it. Keep doing this until he realizes that it's where he stays. You should bring him in at night and on bitter cold days, during the winter tho... so he doesn't freeze from the mountains cold air! That would be animal neglect.

Good luck

Why on earth would you want to exile a precious puppy to the back yard? Dogs belong with their packs - and that means in the house with their humans and other animals.

Your cat will be upset no matter what you do - so let that issue go. That is the way of animals - any change upsets them. So no matter what you do - cat will not like it. He'll get over it though.

Bring the dog into the house and move the plants so that she can't get to them.

Please don't feel bad. Most people here have forgotten that dogs were created to live outside! I got the same sort of responses when I asked about keeping a dog outside. I hope these people treat their kids as well as they apparently do their dogs!
I have two 9 week old Aussie/Border Collie mix pups. We live in the mountains of Idaho, so our climate is much the same as yours. We built a very nice puppy pen in the backyard and they have been more than fine out there. They were not kept in the house from birth, just allowed in occasionally. I let them out during the day and put them back in at night. They willingly go in when it's time and have had no problems out there. They are doing great. Your dog will be fine. It may take some adjustment time, but remember you are training the dog, not the dog training you.
Take care and good luck.

I think that you should not have him outside, because he's only a puppie. You wouldn't want to leave your baby outside for the night? Would you? instead just wait till he gets a lil older then just leave him outside where he can defend himself and can take care of him self. Besides it's to hot outside for him to be out there. Have some heart for the little one. Thank you......

If you leave the dog outside and never let him in he will get used to the idea and know he belongs outside, also to get the dog and cat used to each other try playing with them together, maybe feeding them close to each other, and petting them at the same time. (but slowly, and watch them) Worked for me.

PLEASE!!!! Don't even get the dog! What would be the point of having a dog if you leave it outside all the time? Let someone else who is responsible have it.

Just leave him outside for a while, and he'll get used to it :]

Why would you do that? Dogs are social creatures and want to be inside with their families.
