My dog has to have surgery tomorrow for two abscesses on her back. I'm wondering how long the surgery will take and whether or not i need to plan on taking the day off of work.

That's something you should be asking your vet.

I'm not sure how long those type of surgeries usually take, but I would think it would be a few hours at the very least. The vet should call you once the surgery is done, and let you know how things went, so it's not completely necessary to take a full day off work. Is there a way to take about a half day, so you can take your dog in, and talk with the vet a little beforehand?
Also, they will most likely keep your dog overnight, just to make sure that everything went okay, and to make sure that she stays calm for those crucial hours after the surgery, so you won't have to pick him/her up until the weekend.

I hope everything goes well!

Speak with your vet about this.

It honestly shouldn't take terribly long - an hour or so at most - depending on what he sees once the area has been shaved of fur.

You should be safe in dropping her off early in the morning and picking her up late in the afternoon.

Taking the day off is up to you - I'm sure you'll be preoccupied over this - but remember, pets are not usually covered under "family sick time." So I'd take any time off as vacation or personal time - rather than sick time. It wouldn't do to get in trouble at work.

Be sure to follow your vet's treatment plan closely. Especially when it comes to keeping her quiet and limiting her activity for a few days after the surgery.

Take the day off and take your dog in for surgery. It is important that you get rid of the abscesses or you could easily lose your dog. An abscess is one of the worst thing there is they can kill really quickly. So unless you really don't love your dog Please take the day off and take of your dog

I would call your vet and ask these questions- they should be able to tell you everything that you need to know. Depends on how long surgery is, when they do that, and if they wan to keep her for the day or overnight. Ask- if you cant remember, then write your questions down on paper so that way you have everything covered.

The vet doing the surgery is really the only one that can answer that for you!
