The Watchtower article "Do you know God by name?" reads in part: "What is God's name? Humans all have personal names. Why, many people even name their pets! Would it not be reasonable for God to have a name? ...Ironically, millions who profess faith in the God of the Bible do not use his personal name."

God says at Jer. 16:21"I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know Mine hand and My might; and they shall know that My Name is [YHWH / Jehovah]."

Yet, God then says at Jer. 23:5-6: 5 “ Behold, the days are coming,” says [YHWH/Jehovah] “ That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; NOW THIS IS HIS NAME BY WHICH HE WILL BE CALLED: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS." (In Hebrew, this is "YHWH Tsidkenu.")

It is obvious this "Branch" is Jesus. God also says that the Branch's title will be Jehovah.

If Jesus and God the Father aren't truly One, then why would God call Jesus Jehovah, since He's jealous for His personal name as the WBTS teaches?

And since Jesus' title is Jehovah, how can you claim Jesus is not God?

Please, stick to the question and try your hardest not to try to redirect away from this issue.

I don't ask this question out of hatred. I only wish to get you to think "outside the box" of the WBTS.

Slemetti, you have redirected away from the question. I ask you again: why does God call Jesus Jehovah? Please answer.

LineDancer -- do YOU want the true answer? Or are you content to believe everything that's taught to you, without questioning like the Bereans did?

Line Dancer, I'm disappointed. All that cutting and pasteing and you still didn't answer the question I asked.

WHY DOES JEHOVAH CALL JESUS JEHOVAH? It's a simple question.

2007-07-05 03:37:37 · update #4

Line Dancer: "Yeshua" (Jesus) simply means Salvation; "Yĕhowshuwa" (Joshua) means "Jehovah is Salvation."

TeeM: If a man names his son after himself, that's quite different from a man naming a city after himself. It's clear that Jehovah gave His personal name to His son AND that He wishes His holy city to be called by His name, too. There is no contradiction here.

This is an awesome question Suzanne.

JWs do not realize the significance of Jesus being God humbled as a man.

They do not realize that he is called both Son of Man and Son of God for a reason. He is 100% God (John 20:28,29) and also 100% man. He is God in a man's body (Colossians 2:9) and has humbled himself (Phillippians 2:8).

I think they are unable to read this objectively while believing Jesus is Michael the archangel. My question about that to them is if we are made in the image of God, and the US is supposed to include God and an angel (in their mind)... exactly where does Genesis 1:26,27 say that we are made in the image of angels? It doesn't.

If Jesus and God the Father aren't truly One, then why would God call Jesus Jehovah?

The same reason why father's call their son's after thier own names. William the 2nd? William Jr?

But Instead of being called Jesus the 2nd or jr. God gave the designation of "Salvation" to his Son and agent.(Tit 1:4; 2Pe 1:11) The name Jesus, given to God’s Son by angelic direction, means “Jehovah Is Salvation,” for, said the angel, “he will save his people from their sins.” (Mt 1:21; Lu 1:31)

This name points out that Jehovah is the Source of salvation, accomplished through Jesus. For this reason we find the Father and the Son spoken of together in connection with salvation.—Tit 2:11-13; 3:4-6.

As for Jeremiah 23:5, 6 is a Messianic prophecy describing the future king sprouting from David’s line to “execute justice and righteousness in the land.” Since he rules as God’s representative (even as David, and others, sat “upon Jehovah’s throne” as God’s anointed king; 1Ch 29:23), the prophecy says, “This is his name with which he will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.” There is no basis for claiming, as some have, that this means that Jesus, the Messiah, and Jehovah are the same, forming one God.

This can be seen from the fact that the similar Messianic prophecy at Jeremiah 33:14-16 applies the identical expression to Jerusalem, saying: “And this is what she will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.” In both cases the expression shows that God’s name, Jehovah, placed both upon his promised king and upon his chosen capital, is a guarantee of their righteousness.

Moreover, the justice and righteousness emanating from or expressed by these sources are the product of full devotion to Jehovah and his divine will, bringing Jehovah’s blessing and direction.

I have never felt comfortable with naming God, because the bible has been translated many times. I feel it is best to pray My father who art in heaven, like Jesus taught. I don't think there is a religion that is 100% accurate, the only way to know what is true is to become a scholar and translate the original books yourself, but even if you did that you would have to put your trust in what others believe is the true translation. However, I have been studying with Jehovahs witnesses and I truly believe they are closer to the truth than any other religions out there. The people I study with told me upfront that they don't claim to know everything, rather, they continuously strive to come to an accurate knowledge of truth so they can become as close to Jesus as humanly possible. I would also like to note that they are the friendliest, most honest and caring people I have ever met, and I truly believe they are trying to help me find salvation and answers to why we are here and why the world is the way it is. It is my own shortcomings that I have a problem with not the Jehovahs Witnesses. The path to salvation is not an easy one, especially in these times when so many have turned against God. I would like to note that I was on the verge of suicide when they entered my life and if it weren't for them I would probably be dead right now. They helped me survive something that doctors couldn't help with, because they gave from their hearts, and they never charged me or asked for a single penny. : )

This phrase is a title and is used twice in the bible,

once for the city of Jerusalem

(Jeremiah 33:16) In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem itself will reside in security. And this is what she will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.’”

and once for Jesus.

Jer. 23:6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel itself will reside in security. And this is his name with which he will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.”

Calling the city of Jerusalem 'Jehovah is our Righteousness' doesn't make the city equal to Jehovah

Jehovah's name is also used in connection of Mount Moriah.

as Jehovah-jireh (the same place as Jehovah Tsidh·qe′nu)

Gen 22:14 And Abraham began to call the name of that place Je·ho′vah-ji′reh. This is why it is customarily said today: “In the mountain of Jehovah it will be provided.”

Since Heb 1:9 shows that the God of Jesus, anointed him to represent Him.

Since Heb 1:3 shows that Jesus is a representitive of Jehovah, then like the City of Jerusalem, Jesus can bear the tile or name of 'Jehovah is our Righteousness'

Eph 1: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give YOU a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the accurate knowledge of him;

Your Q alone shows that YOU don't understand it properly.
You are claiming the Bible has a contradiction.
i.e. Jehovah, YHWH, the creator of heaven and earth
contradicted Himself; Not So.
There is NO contradiction; so ur Q is invalid.
I read it, and read it again; thinking of it, as/ how you put it...
I still don't see the twisted perversion of God's word,
in your line of reasoning. I read it again, nope.
I discern God raises a branch, a King, he executes judgement in the earth,
all 3 of these references are of Jesus;
God's own ppl will be saved and safe, and then a name,
as a reference, Jehovah* wants us to know;
who he (Jesus) is, who* sent him (Jesus),
whom it is we must turn our attention to,
who* his (Jesus') God* and Father* is.
His Son is such a perfect reflection of his God and Father that Jehovah attachs His own name, to His Son.

U already rec'ved some fine Scriptiual testimony,
so I went w/ an answer from the heart & mind.

* Jehovah is the personage of 'who, God and Father' ; above.

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; and this is the name whereby she shall be called: Jehovah our righteousness. – ASV , Jer 33:16

Jerusalem was called “Jehovah our righteousness”. Is Jerusalem Jehovah God?

The name “Joshua” means Jehovah is Salvation, is the man Joshua the God Jehovah?

Isaiah 54:17 states “This is the hereditary possession of the SERVANTS of Jehovah, and their RIGHTEOUSNESS IS FROM ME” is the utterance of Jehovah.

Acts 4:30 states “while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus.”

So Jesus is also a Servant and as Isa 54:17 Jesus’ righteousness is from Jehovah.

"He shall be called:'The Lord is our Vindicator.'" That is how the 1978 edition of the translation by the Jewish Publication Society of America rendered Jer.23:6,whereas Moffatt's translation reads:,"our champion".No man on earth came to bear that name literally.Yet the prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. His becoming entitled to that name does not mean that Jesus is Jehovah God himself. The Israelite called Jehozadak, whose name means "Jehovah Declared Righteous" or "Jehovah is Righteous" was not Jehovah himself(1Chron.6:14,15).
Jer.33:16 tells us that even Jerusalem was to be called "Jehovah is our Righteousness",but that does not mean that Jerusalem was Jehovah himself? No!
The name of the last reigning king of Jerusalem was Zedekiah, and that name means "The righteousness of Jah".The king who was to be called "Jehovah is Our Righteousness," namely,Jesus Christ, contrasts sharply with King Zedekiah

You don't want any real answers.

How can Jesus be Jehovah when he called his Father the only true God? (John 17:3)

How can Jesus be Jehovah when his God and Father knows more than he does? (Matt. 24:36; John 20:17)

How can Jesus be Jehovah if he is at God's right hand? 1 Pet. 3:22

How can Jesus be Jehovah if his Father resurrected him from the dead? (Gal. 1:1)

How can Jesus be Jehovah if he was GIVEN "all authority in heaven and on earth"? If he were Jehovah, wouldn't he already have it?

How can Jesus be Jehovah when God is Jesus' head? (1 Cor. 11:3)

How can Jesus be Jehovah when Jehovah is the Most High, but Jesus is the Son of the Most High? (Ps. 83:18; Luke 1:32)

How can Jesus be Jehovah when 1 Cor. 8:6 says: "There is actually to us One God the Father"? Isn't Jesus the Son?

How can Jesus be Jehovah when he is God's "holy servant"? (Acts 4:30)

How can Jesus be Jehovah when Jehovah is immortal and Jesus was dead for parts of 3 days, and thus had to be resurrected BY God? (Hab. 1:12; Acts 2:24, 32)

You take one scripture, twist it, and then try to make it say what you want it to mean while ignoring the rest of the Bible.

Jesus and his Father Jehovah are one, but they are still different persons, the same as a husband and wife are one. (John 10:30; Gen 2:24) They are one in purpose; they are in harmony; they are in agreement. Jesus prayed that his followers would also be one in purpose when he said: "“I have given them the glory which you have given me, in order that they may be one just as we are one.” (John 17:22)

For your information, I did not cut and paste anything. All I did was ask questions and then support them with Bible verses. Can't you see that? To say Jehovah called Jesus Jehovah is absurd. If you can read, then read the scriptures I listed. How can Jehovah call Jesus Jehovah when they are TWO different persons? If you want more scriptures that show they are different individuals, let me know.

There is no basis for claiming, as you have done, that Jeremiah 23:6 means that Jesus, the Messiah, and Jehovah are the same, forming one God.

One last thing. While "Christ" is a title, "Jesus" is a personal name, not a title. It means "Salvation of Jehovah."

The name Jesus (Gr., I·e·sous′) corresponds to the Hebrew name Jeshua (or, in fuller form, Jehoshua), meaning “Jehovah Is Salvation.”

Jehovah's Witnesses might recognize the cited verse thusly:

(Jeremiah 23:5,6) There are days coming,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “and I will raise up to David a righteous sprout. And a king will certainly reign and act with discretion and execute justice and righteousness in the land. ...And this is his name with which he will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.”

Of course, most bible students already know that the name Jesus literally means “Jehovah Is Salvation”. By contrast, it is the name Zedekiah which literally means "Jehovah Is Righteousness". Clearly, neither Zedekiah nor Jesus were actually Almighty God Jehovah, but merely had his name within the definitions of their names (as did dozens of bible characters).

Those who would pretend that the name "Jehovah is Salvation" means that the nameholder is himself Jehovah ignore also that the city of Jerusalem was similarly named with this exact name, just a few pages over from the passage cited in this question.

(Jeremiah 33:16) Jerusalem itself will reside in security. And this is what she will be called, Jehovah Is Our Righteousness.’”

There are actually not any contradictions there. What Abijah reported would desire to make clean it. purely conversing we are actually not in basic terms conversing of semantics, yet in addition with regard to the sequence of activities in time. God with the aid of Jesus will resurrect the righteous and unrighteous, and with the aid of that thousand 365 days reign, they're going to all learn righteousness (Isaiah 26:9-10) There are human beings in this international who resorted to unrighteous acts through fact of not sufficiently heard the observe of God, and that they gets their hazard then. God does recognize the midsection, yet people would desire to all recognize that all and sundry will take delivery of the prospect to benefit and be saved. "nonetheless the depraved would be shown desire, he purely is purely not taught righteousness" Isaiah wrote under notion in that verse above. those will take delivery of a similar hazard that others have and their reaction will the two shop them (with the aid of their putting faith) or condemn them (with the aid of rejecting what they learn) "death would be not greater" after the single thousand years have ended. observe that throughout Revelation, that verse is in Revelation 21:4, after the account in financial disaster 20 with regard to the thousand years. The death which would be not greater would be the Adamic death, the death that we die through inherited sin. If everybody else at some later time behaves like devil the devil, then the record of our time will condemn them, and the 2d death, that's the death that one dies from one's very own option to prepare sin, gets closer them. That verse with regard to the 2d death is in Revelation 21, yet in verse 8, AFTER the prophecy approximately "death would be not greater" No contradictions. the superb judgment is a shining occasion of God's understanding and justice, far greater advantageous than that of any human. all of us would desire to compliment Jehovah for his fairness and love for humanity and righteousness..

I do not know myself, where the name Jehovah comes from.
