Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon. Sit at an outdoor cafe and just people watch while you eat gelato. Eat as much pasta as you can. There are lots of little free shows going on all the time in the squares so take the time to watch one and most definitely see Vatican City.

We saw the Spanish Steps but wasn't all that impressed. If you have time, take a side trip to Pompeii and the Isle of Capri.

i did the same as you. I researched and printed off 13 pages of ideas of what to do, etc. I didn't read any of them. Rome is different than any other city. Anywhere you go there are tons of things to do. You can pick up a map from your hotel or buy one anywhere in a store and they have all the sites on the map so you know where they all are and how to get to them. You can't walk through rome without bumping into a beautiful old building, they are everywhere. I liked hanging out at the spanish steps in the evening, trevi fountain is beautiful at night, coliseum and spanish forum are right next to each other and are great to hang out during the day, the vatican when it's cloudy or cold outside, pantheon is the most beautiful when it's raining. So there you go, those are the must see sites, the rest you'll run into anyway. :)

Rome is a wonderful city, with interesting things to see almost everywhere you turn. I'd buy a cheap guidebook and pick the ones that appeal to you.

Usual highlights will include:

The Coliseum
The Roman Forum
The Pantheon
St Peter's and the Vatican
The Trevi Fountain
Any of the galleries or museums

See the sites...the Coliseum, the Parthenon. Sit on the Spanish Steps with a gelato and watch people. Window shop. Go to Piazza Navonna one night to see all the struggling artists. Eat Pizza Margherita. Have a cappuchino.
Visit the Mouth of Truth. Take lots of photos to capture your memories. Ciao.
