When you're late 40s the name 'boyfriend' sounds silly. He's not my 'partner' as we dont live together. His is my 'lover' but that's too much information! He is my 'friend' but thats not enough. Any ideas??

You know what it's funny but I sometimes referred to my ex as my partner despite not living with him and had people frown, BUT we shared everything other than a roof and if felt right. He is your partner in life now right so why not use the word?

Or do as I did when asked who he was and was sick of being asked I told them he was my bit of stuff, shut everyone up!

Companion would be the best I guess.
"Hi, this is my companion Bill"
Doesn't sound right does it?
Like your talking about a dog, lol.
Just use boyfriend, it is universally accepted in society to use that reference at any age, and everyone knows exactly what it means.
There are way to many things in life to worry about besides this.

Just use his name.

Hi, my name is Jane. This is Bob.
of if you are talking about him - Bob likes to eat cheese.
Bob and I went for a walk last Saturday.
Bob is my lover.
Bob smokes herbal substances.
I want to go to the store with Bob.

I think he's still your partner even if you don't live with him!

Or just say, "the man I'm seeing", if it's not too serious at the moment.

You can say "my good friend" or just "my friend" if you make your voice say the rest. Unfortunately, "companion" is old fashioned and a bit like a term used for a dog.

Does it really matter - boyfriend, partner, man friend - just a name - that's all.

Don't lose sleep over thinking about it - just enjoy the relationship
