if i use a darker granite counter top what color tile should i use for the back splash?

You could use A lighter color, say a tumbled marble tile ( like botticinino, travertine, ciaro etc) and have a tile mural installed
to be your focal point,, frame it with a rope tile frame and then surround it with the plain tiles
There are so many images to choose , It would be dramatic and look like it was painted and yet be low cost

Well, a bit more information would have been nice... like what color are your cabinets, what style is the kitchen, what mood do you want the kitchen to set... But since you just gave us the countertop to work with, here is my suggestion:
Have you considered metal tiles? They are ALL THE RAGE today and will last forever! I love metal tiles, as metal is a neutral as far as color is concerned, which means whenever you want to change your paint color or cabinets, metal tiles will work. Also, you can get them in very different designs and they pretty much match any decor (except maybe country... but I guess even then, you could manage it.)

Take a piece of your counter top to see what works by holding it next to selections of tiles. There are so many possibilities. By doing this you will be able to see what looks best for you.

I think a light yellow tile with floral accents would look good. But as in all things to do with decorating, it is a matter of personal tastes.

I think a silver colored back splash would look good. I did one for mine by using flashing and took glue to attach it. I love it!!
