Because it's not as visible as when someone with whiter skin gets sunburnt. . .it's not painfully obvious when a dark-skinned person gets sunburnt but when someone with a lighter skin tone does, it's right in your face

I believe so much ignorance and intolerance comes from our childhood. Black was always the color that never mixed, so to a child, how can black become red, and we link red to sunburn. Therefore we just grow up with a base belief that someone with dark skin, can't have skin that turns red. Without red skin, they're not sunburnt. It's kind of like the whole deal with elementary teachers often teaching their students that blood is blue, and only turns red after it oxidizes because it looks blue through our skin.

Hehe, I know a black guy who had that belief himself, and so spent the entire day outside with no sunblock, and got sunburned. He acted like he was dying. I wouldn't chalk that belief up to racism, since black people obviously have that belief too.

most people just dont really think about it, if u consider the ostrich syndrome (if u dont see it, it isnt there) since sunburn skin on lack people isnt readily apparent on black peoples skin, people think it doesnt happen. black skin is naturally equipped for hot weather and UV waves, like the conditions of southern africa, to fight against sunburn, just like light skin and eye color are better equipped for colder weather, like the conditions of northern europe and russia. but when it comes to educating oneself, in my town, which is predominantly black, if a white guy, like myself, were to go up to a black guy on the street and ask him"Hey is that sunburn?" the white guy would most likely get shot, so dont get too upset when the world has a lack of curiosity.

all people do get sunburns. melanin, a pigment found in our skin protects slightly from the uv waves. the high melanin content in the skin makes a black less susceptible to sunburns. on the other hand, whites has less melanin concentration in their skin, giving them a light complexion and a lesser protection from the uv waves, making them more susceptible to sunburns
