Please don't use one of these! Try training him using non-physical methods. A dog's only way of communicating with you is through his bark or whine or growl, etc. If you put a collar on a baby to keep it from crying through the night, they would take your kid away. If you learn why the dog is barking and correct the issue there will be no need for the physical.
Bark collars are almost as bad as "de-barking" a dog. Don't even get me started on that! :)
Check out Tamara Geller's book, "The Loved Dog". I use a lot of her methods and they work great. I know she has some advice about barking. (And she's way better than Cesar Milan.)
Good luck. Listen to your hubby on this one. :)

Do you get sprayed in the face when you talk? Would you like it?
It really does depend on what your dog is barking at as to which way to tackle the issue.
If it is when someone is at the door, on your driveway or near your property, don't do anything! It's normal for a dog to 'protect the pack'.
If the dog continuously barks because he/she wants to come indoors, then let the dog in.
If the dog barks for attention, give it some attention (why did you buy a dog afterall).
If the dog barks for no apparent reason then perhaps the dog is bored.
But, if you feel there is a real issue then punish the dog...but not with a spray collar because not all barking is wrong. How boring would a dog be without it's bark. Would be just like a cradboard cutout on wheels.

Depends on the severity of the problem. If you absolutely cannot stop your dog barking, a bark collar should be a last resort.
First, get to the route cause of problem. WHY is your dog barking? while it is true that some dogs like the sound of their own voice (they would be a candidate for a citronella spray collar) most dogs bark for a reason. Boredom, loneliness, anxiety, frustration and excitement are all possible causes. Sometimes doing something simple like getting your dog on a consistant routine and upping the amount of daily exercise can cure many problems.
Good luck.

I wouldn't recommend it. Our dog only barked when he was alone in the house and he heard somthing strange outside but we were worried about upsetting the neighbours. We bought a mussle and put it on him before we left the house. This stops the barking and they can still drink from there bowls etc. We used this method for about 2 weeks and then tried him without it. We were told from the next door neighbour that she hadn't heard him all day. The silence carried on for about a week and then we were advised that he did it again. We used the mussle for a day and then again left him without it. He dosn't bark now. The threat of the mussle is enough. I would say that this is a much gentler way to contol the problem

Your husband is right, the spray type do not work. Unfortunately, most people here are wrong too. I use the Electric bark collar and it works on all dogs, all the time. They are one of the best investements I have ever made in dog equipment. I also use the remote trainers which are Electric collars, but can be used remotely up to a mile distance. I hope this helped.

Hi carolinehancock2001, they used anti-bark spray once at the dog training club and it didn't work. I assume it works with some dogs, so why not get a can of anti-bark spray first and just try it with your dog before you go to the expense of a collar.

first why is your dog barking? is the dog well exercised and mentally stimulated? usually bored dogs will bark non stop. i would start with more exercise and a training class, so you can better control your dog. the bark collar should be the last thing you try. because with the collar you are only controlling the behavior, not correcting it. and it doesn't work with every dog. your best thing is to get to the root of the problem and work from there. good luck.

I spent a fortune on both these and the collars that do a high pitched whistle both to no avail. what does seem to be working is a filled an empty spray bottle with water and when they bark or do anything i dont want them to i spray them in the face myself. its cheaper, working and i think it is reinforcing that i am the head of the pack and what i say goes. good luck

seen them used by a dog trainer brilliantly
they should only be used when your are there so that you can instantly reward your dog when it stops thus meaning they learn them have to stop barking and not just that the collar alone means no barking
follow the instructions carefully and consult a local trainer if you need to be sure - otherwise you could just make the problme worse.
if you think a collar could be too expensive try a water pistol instead

Ya he's right a waste of $$$$.
