Definitely go to NY. I lived in Hollywood for years and let me tell ya - unless you have a specific *purpose* in going *and* you have some kind of transportation (i.e. rental car) there isn't much to look at.
New York is so jam packed with museums, parks, theaters, restaurants, bars - all in either walking distance or via subway. Granted, it can get a bit expensive, but you can still enjoy the city if you know where to look and where to stay.
Depending on what you want to do, I would suggest spending a little more on a hotel. I only say this because I had a very bad experience with a "cheap" hotel and I wish I would have paid the extra $100 to get a *decent* room.
Williamsburg is an up-and-coming city, which is right across the bridge from Manhattan. Check that out if you don't want to spend too much but want to be close to the city.
Not to say that Hollywood isn't great either. Hollywood is close to everything as well -- as long as you have a *CAR*. Hollywood is known for its bars/clubs/trendy restaurants. You're about 20 min. away from Downtown LA and right down the street from Farmer's Market (lots of celebrity spotting).
If you're not penny pinching, I would definitely suggest NY. If you're on a bit of a budget, opt for Hollywood, but check out Tripadvisor.com for hotels first.

Definitely New York! I went to Hollwood last year and it was a complete dud. I think everyone expects to be this glamarous place because all the movie stars live there but its not...It is really run down and trashy.I was completley dissapointed when i went there. On the other hand New York has lots of famous landmarks and muh more things to do. And the shopping there is loads better too:).

New York. The famous live on both coast. Yet before they were famous most started out in New York. If they had strong connections, they started out in Hollywood.

I went to Hollywood last year and you get to see some pretty neat things. I passed by as someone was getting a star on the Hollwood Walk of Fame..we also saw the handprints of the celebrities and at Universal Studios, you go on the backlot tour and see movie sets..very fun and highly recommendable.

New york city. Its fun, fast,and theres a ton of things to see and do.
And go to San Fran or San Diego instead of Hollywood..San fran is beautiful,has delicious food..San diego is great and has that famous zoo.
