It is the culture of india you show a respect in that way to get the blessings.
You will be having your own ways to show the respect to the elders and the faith but for us it is to lead a life in which one can discriminate between faith and believe.
You can consider any religion of the country , they all prostrate in front of there god whether a picture or a granth or bible or gita etc..
These are the sentiments of the people to show love and affection.
Sometimes in your life time you would surely have done the same, ask your heart not brain.

Those who are going to Temples, or pray the Gods or Goddess or Saints in picture do so to show their respect and for offering the prayers. When visiting the mandir or such places for prayers Hindus remove their shoes, show respect to the god by folding their hands, bowing or lying prostrate and making offerings of food or money.
These are age old practise to accept such Gods etc, as the superior most and pray them by prostrating them.-

Prostrate is a symbol of giving respect... When such an act is done, it means respect is given to gods or saints or elders...
Leg is considered to be the lowest part of a body... When falling on the leg, it means that the person is much lower than the leg and hence mercy be given upon him...

Prostrataion is a symbolism for complete surrender of the self also called as ego.Without complete surrender, you are not going to reach the ultimate. It is another matter that those who prostrate may not know this aspect. They are following the previously set norms of paying respects and obeisance.

It is a form of worship, though it is not unlike the Idol worship of old. The only one who should be prostrated to is Allah.
