Instead of writing God, some people write G-d. What does that mean? How is it different from writing God (if you were the one writing it)? I dont have an opinion on whether its good or bad because it would depend on the motive, i think. I'd like honest input from everyone!

Remember: I'll respect you; please do the same for me!

By respect i dont mean hold the same beliefs/opinions. I mean say what you have to say in a polite way

There are several different reasons people do this. Here are the 3 main ones:

*Out of respect.

*Because it is believed that writing "GOD" on something makes it holy and that thing must ever after be treated as a holy item.

*In the Jewish faith, the reason that some write G-D is to do honor to the name of YHWH, or God. Scribes were forbidden to write the name with a used quill, nor was any permitted to speak the name out of reverence, and fear of potential blasphemy.

A side note in response to the person who said writing "xmas" was disgusting:

It's really not. Before you condemn - do your research! In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ (Χριστός). Since the mid-sixteenth century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ. Hence "Xmas" is NOT disrespectful - is simply means Christ-mas!

I always saw xians and xmas as a way of using the 'x' symbolic of the cross. But the G-d. Heh, maybe it's a reference to the Tetragrammaton, where they left out the vowels in god's name.

I believe some of the Jews, and others hold the name of God in such respect, that they don't believe it is right to even write it. So out of respect, they write it as G-d.

I think the reason some people write G-d instead of God is because they don't want to have anyone think that they believe that God exists, and that by writing it that way, it emphasizes that they are not a believer in this deity. I also think it may show a certain amount of anger the writer may have toward the deity and?or the people who believe in it/him/whatever!

I'm a Pagan, just FYI in this scenario.

Some people esp Jews don't like to say the name of the Lord. So they do things like that. It is taking the 2 or 3 commandment to an EXTREME!!!!!!!!! That shall not take thy Lord your God's name in vain. Of course we should not exclaim His name as a curse, but they have gone too far in my opinion.

Then again people nowadays are very wicked and exclaim my Lord's name as a curse which is terrible.

You never hear people say MO-HAM-ED!

Maybe they are imbarassed to write God. It is the same for merry Christmas, and people write merry xmas, which is disgusting. And some people use xtians instead of christians. Sad really.

Using the moniker of 'god' with the capital G like it is a name or something is what they, I guess, are trying to avoid.

.
writting GOD or God or G-d, do not concern at all,
it all depends on me, with what level of feeling i do that,

believe you me,
even if i write GOD and illustrating something funny and
if i write even gd only for worship from the deep of my heart,
then one has to decide hinself/herself, what to
conclude...

you respect all, then
