It is stupid to believe an ignorant athiest from the 1800's but it is really stupid to believe that ghost can be justified through humanistic beliefs. I only need answers from anyone who can explain how atheism and the belief in spiritual beings can coexist.

Thanks for the answers so far; many have been elightening but some very vacuous. I would like to clarify that ghost are spiritual beings and no scholarly study has ever attempted to prove otherwise. The only exception is those suffering from mental illness. These individuals sometimes imagine beings that are not present. These are not the ghosts that I was referering to.

Atheists generally do not believe in ghosts. Religious people do...at least a vast number of them do. Religious people are far more spiritual than people who do not believe in what they can't see and understand. I am a Deist (I believe in God but I do not believe in religion) and I do not believe in spirits, ghosts, demons, heaven, hell, gargoyles, the devil, etc. I do believe in God as the creator of the universe and all life. Religion is mainly guilty for the belief in demons, spirits and ghosts.

I believe in ghosts but that doesn't mean I assume to know what they are. There's no complete evidence to suggest that they are dead people, demons or whatever and there aren't even any proper scientific studies in the matters because they are inconsistent.
I don't get why people seem to think that they're a religious thing. For a start, most religions have some explanation of ghosts and for the most part they're inconsistent too. And they certainly don't prove the existence of souls or gods at all.

An atheist only does not believe in a god. It is entirely possible to believe in the supernatural and be an atheist (though rare). One does not have anything to do with the other. While many atheists do tend towards a blanket disbelief in the supernatural, not all of them do.
I used to believe in ghosts...when I was a kid and didn't know any better. Now I do.

Ghosts aren't spiritual beings. Your belief in God one way or the other will not inclinate you to see or accept the idea of ghosts. Athiesm is not accepting God and that idea is perfectly compatable with the idea of seeing the remains of the dead. You just have to realize that ghosts aren't part of any major religion.

I am an athiest and do not believe in ghosts.
Other athiests may though, as athiesm is simply not believing in a "higher power" of sorts, ghosts not being higher powers by any standards

As an atheist my view is that those beliefs cannot coexist. In theory, though, some atheists only believe that God does not exist, which doesn't rule out any other supernatural occurrences.

The only thing atheists have in common is no belief in god however defined, not all of them are intellectual giants. Some may be persuaded by evidence that there are ghosts, most are not.

An atheist doesn't believe in the existence of god. Being an atheist doesn't commit one to a disbelief in ghosts.

it is stupid to build a question around a reference you make no effort to explain.

I had an ex lady buddy who replaced into thoroughly confident of the existence of ghosts, yet replaced into an atheist. for advantageous, we had some enormously exciting conversations around the breakfast table. "it rather is there in case you think it!" "No, you notice it there on account which you think it to be there."
