Man, are you going to get a lot of hate responses to this one.
I got an excellent book called The Everything Understanding Islam Book by By Christine Huda Dodge. It's actually very easy to read. Also for a general background, go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam
http://www.isb.org.uk/pages/islamexplained.htm
http://mohammadr.googlepages.com/
Let me apologize in advance for some of the uninformed, hate filled responses you will get to this question.
Edit- I should have typed faster, I see I was a little late in my apology to you. I really don't know why people who have no intention of answering you question with something helpful even bother.
Edit- If you actually want to learn about the Qur'an, I would avoid friend's suggestion. The author's website gives his mission statement as "Thank you for your interest in Don Richardson Book Sales. We are one of the premier providers of books related to the spread of Christianity in cultures worldwide." I tend to stay away from biased books written by people with an agenda when trying to actually learn something. You'd have better luck asking Ann Coulter to explain Islam to you.
Let the thumbs down begin,
Channa

That is so sweet you are proud of her! When I converted to Islam this is what I told My Mother. I asked her, Shouldn't she be proud that I had found God and peace?
I am so happy that a new convert has such a helpful family member that is backing her up! Peace and Blessings for you my friend!
There is much to learn about Islam! I have been studying for 4 years now and still feel I learn something new everyday!
I think the main thing you should know about Islam is that we believe that there is Only One God and prophet Muhammad was the last of Gods Prophets. We believe in all of the other Prophets Including Jesus. except we don't believe he was God nor do we believe he was crucified on the cross.
We believe in the other Holy Books but believe that some things have been changed and omitted. You can find these changes and omissions in the Quran.
In the Quran it says that any person who believes in ONE God is considered a Muslim. So even Jesus was a Muslim because he believed in ONE God.
The problem with Islam today is that many people don't follow the Quran. The Quran is very straight forward and I believe does not really need mans interpretations.
When reading the Quran the only thing to keep in mind is that many of the things apply to that time.
The one thing that confused me when I converted was the 4 wives. We need to remember in this case that all of the men were at war and dying so many women were left widowless and unbelievers. So it was permitted for a man to take up to 4 wives to take care of and to teach Islam to. Before the Quran came many men had up to 100 wives so God lowered this to up to 4 only and if all the women agreed and if they were all treated exactly the same.
In todays society this really doesn't apply...It can be used but rarely is. There are too many men now and not enough women!
I think the main thing you could do is start reading the Quran.
I have a link to an online translation of the Quran and it is very good!
http://www.quranexplorer.com/
I hope this helped! If you have any other questions be free to email me or ask on here! There are many educated friendly Muslims here always willing to help!

Here are some things about Muhammed that some people don't want you to know.
At 54 years of age, Muhammed had sexual intercourse with a 9 year old "Child"!!

Exactly what do u want to know about Islam? There r those who will tell u it is a voilent reliegion and people like myself which will tell u other wise. I recommend www.islamalawys.com quiet a good site and also www.irf.net there r some question and answers u might find intresting. If u point to have a point cleared out just e-mail me.
Islam is a religion which believes in One God, Allah. It believes in all the prophets from the Bible but some of the stories are a bit different. U have to read them to know the difference. Anyway, it has codes on how to lead ur lives, N I think they r quiet practical. I mean, ok, u might say that cutting a theif's hand might sound voilent but if u think it cold-heartedly, u will see that if govt really does start cutting hands, maybe theives will get scared and stop stealing so much.

sir since i'm the resident of india, the only hindu nation other than nepal. the country is surrounded with only islam and buddhism following nations so i'll like to say something on your question.
the founder of islam was prophet muhammed. he was born in mecca in A.D 570. the sacred book of koran was handed to him by allah through an angel.
there are 5 main teaching of koran:
1.There is no god but allah and muhammed is his prophet
2. muslims must pray 5 times a day
3. muslims must give alms to poor
4. muslims must observe fast during holy month of ramazan
5. muslims must take pligrimage to mecca once in life if they can afford. it is known as haj.
the three basic tenets of islam are (i) sharia, the religious law (ii)sunna, containing muhammed's saying and deeds (iii) offering namaz.
The jews and christians could not reconcile these tenets. For allah, mohammed believed, was the same deity who had spoken to Noah, Abaham, Moses, Jesus and other Hebrew prophet.muslims are monotheistic. For muslims muhammed was the greatest and last prophet.
Muhammed died in A.D 632. After his death islam split into two sects i.e. shia and sunni Sunni are those who believe sunnah and shia believed muhammed's son-in-law. Shias considered themselves as community of faithful. ultimately the fight broke out between the two groups. Ali was murdered in A.D 661 and his son too was killed at Karbala in Iraq in A.D 680. The shia-sunni split however did not end. Instead, Shias became more determined. The division continues upto this day.
The shia - sunni split is not the only one. Extreme sects have split into numerous subgroup. Among these include Ahmadiyas, Bohras, Ismailies, Druzes and Bahais.

As a muslim we submit ourselves to God and what God asks of us...
What does God ask of us?
1. God asks us to worship Him and nothing else
2. To believe in all the prophets and not discriminating against them or holding some in more regard than others..and that Prophet Mohammed is the last and final prophet and no other will come after him.
3. To believe in Angels and Heaven and Hell and that a day is coming in which all will be held accountable for what they did on earth
4. To act with justice in all matters whether it be towards muslims or non muslims(ally or enemy)
5. To give in charity as often and in anyway we can...to always look at the one in need below us and not at the one we envy above us.
6. To forgive those that harm us all though we have the right to self defense or compensation
7. To spread the word of God until it prevails around the world
Islam is made up of many many small things that make up our daily lives..these things may seem inconsequential until you look at the big picture...the big picture meaning...live your life as if God is following you around taking notes all the time...writing your book so to speak...you must decide what you want your book to say on the final day of reckoning..Believer or Deceiver
Im glad you are supporting your neice....people seem to think if you find peace within a religion that is not theirs then you are not only shunning your "true faith" but losing your family as well. Good luck with your search

Do not listen to those with negative responses. This is all because of fear of Islam & jealousy.
Islam is all about believeing in one God & that Muhammad (PBUH) is his prophet (very similar to Chritianity). Also Islam is all about Unity. Muslims have to stand side by side and help each other. Do not believe those who say that Muslims are ordered to kill all non-Muslims, it shows clearly in the Quraan that Muslims are ordered to do so only if attacked.
Below, is a link to the Koran or Quraan in English. Everything is mentioned in it. Your niece will definately be happy with that religion & I guarantee that. You will see how her life will change to the better. That's a promise.

The archangel Gabriel came down from heaven and spoke to Muhammad about life and then he wrote it downin a book called the koran.
