One child while sleeping told his mother - Mom wake me up when i am hungry
Mom said - my child when you are hungry, you will wake up yourself !!! the hunger will no more let you sleep peacefully.
We know well when we are hungry for God's love

If you are becoming more truthful, more kind, forgiving, less angry, more patient, more understanding towards others, less criticising others, then for sure you are travelling forward in the path of spirituality. If things are same, you are standing still. If such things like untruthfulness etc are increasing then consider yourself moving away from God. There is no other thermometer or quotient for measuring spiritual progress.

I think that it depends on how fulfilling you feel your life is. If you are not content with where you are in life you may not be doing all that you can or should.
